Cinco de Mayo (the 5th of May in Spanish) is a national holiday in Mexico. It commemorates the victory of Mexican forces led by General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín over the French occupational forces in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. In the United States, Cinco de Mayo has taken on a significance beyond its significance in Mexico. The holiday is observed by many Americans regardless of ethnic origins, particularly along the southern border states where there is a large population of Mexican origin. Although it is no more an officially-recognized holiday than St. Patrick's Day or May Day in the United States, many cities with large populations of Mexican origin honor the day as a symbolic representation of Mexican pride and as a representation of a culture that blends both Mexican and American roots. (Wikipedia).
As I live in Texas so I get to somewhat be a part of the celebrations. I have been very fortunate to be exposed to the Mexican culture that is rich and diverse with an emphasis on food, family, friends and fun! This culture is also seeped in music with the mariachi tradition of telling tales of love and honor with serenades.
Tonight, to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, I eat good Mexican food, drink good Mexican beer (and maybe some tequila) and share my night of fun with family and friends.
Cheers!
Two songs today to celebrate this day. Both are from the ultra-amazing Nortec Collective out of Tijuana and are off the Tijuana Sessions Volume 3 out on Mil Records.
If you haven't come across this collective before please check them out-talented in musical and visual creativity that is influenced by tradition with such a contemporary twist that is littered with old and new cultural signposts.
