civil music

Civil music

three amazing tunes from civil music (site/ blog) out of london and one, the original of a tune covered here.  civil music is , with all things considered, a label with an amazing roster of artists producing some of the finest tunes around right now with one of them 'drums of death' tipped to be a name to watch out for in '09.
first up though is another one to lend an ear to. heard it today on a nice little mix by LeFtO, over on the brownswood blog. kotchy, with labelmate, rusko's (skwee) remix of 'sing what you want'.
just lovely stuff all round.
Download Sing What You Want (Rusko's Skwee Remix)

Jamz
next up is javelin, with 'flutey flakes', a slo-disco boogie of the finest order with just a hint of some latin feel.

Dod
next up is 'drums of death' with the too massive refix of escort's 'starlight' see below). a wondrous track that seems to span a range of genres building to a knock out tune.

repost: party favour...dj sandrinho playing next week

Manrecriobailefunk

excuse my french but right now i can hardly f**kin' contain myself with the amount of bass action coming my way over the next four weeks!

back in april 07 I wrote the post below about dj sandrinho who is now playing next weekend (for free) as part of deaf. he is playing at the South William which is quite trendy in general but has top music and on a friday night for this kinda show will be full of up for it party people ready for some baile funk action in a dark, low ceiling dancefloor. see you there!

Music is just great. I think we can all agree on that. It invokes all kinds of emotions and memories at the first sound of a piano being played, trumpet blowing, guitar strumming or a voice that sings words that mean the world to you. Music can be used to deliver a message that can make you think, challenge you to act or to show love for someone.

Then there is music that is just made to make you move your body!
This is one such tune.
Now I don't know DJ Sandrinho and I certianly can't speak to the message that he wanted to convey when creating this track but I really do believe that all he foresaw was a room full of bodies dancing along without abandon. Mission accomplished I say! I've listened to this track at least 20 times since buying it last night and each time I am so tempted to hop on a plane and head off to Brazil to party. :-)
Baile Funk at its finest here  with such playful percussion and some of the dirtiest bass that I've ever come across. Released on Man Recordings ,this track, Montagem Percua, is taken from Baile Funk Masters #1.
With "Baile Funk Masters" Man Recordings starts a second series which deals with the mad beats from Rios favelas. "Baile Funk Masters" exclusively presents the real deal: Raw, uncut baile funk, straight outta studios of Rio De Janeiross currently hottest producers.

Also good for me is that Ghislain is playing in Dublin next month at Transmission on Novemeber 15th. More bass oddessy sessions for me after I indulge in some Roots Manuva action on the 1st at The Academy (no mention of the show on their site but tickets available here).

And, to make up for the severe lack of posts of late (serious lack of broadband partially being the reason), heres another one for you bass junkies.

you know me

Roisin
Róisín Murphy comes to town in December so I'll definitely be going along to check out her show. While some reviews of her live shows have been hit or miss the thoughts of  "slithery rhythms, percussion-laced Ibizan beats and muscular disco-funk..." are so enticing when delivered by the sultry Murphy.
Hot on the heels of working with Roots Manuva on his new album, here's a bass heavy Toddla T remix of 'you know me better'.

Bounce
One of the highlights during SXSW was definitely getting to listen to Ghislain Poirier play 3 times over the course of the 4 days. On top of hearing him play I got to hang out with him a bit also and he is a super nice guy. Definitely passionate about his sounds and very laid back about the world that goes on around him.
The sets he played were superb with an amazing remix of a Roisin Murphy tune. One of a kind apparently and the $5 bribe I offered for a copy wasn't accepted! ;)

Anyways. Here is the video of the top tune, Blazin' off the album ' No Ground Under'.

Ghislain has some shows in Europe coming up and I highly recommend you check him out. BASS heavy!

best deejay

Poes

I've had this tune for ages now and it never ceases to grab my attention and get me into the mood for dancing. its the kind of tune that you find and don't really wanna share here so that you can play it out every now and again so it surprises people. Its so simple yet brilliant in its cleverness.

A simple beat and rolling bassline accompanied by Melodee talking about the going out with her girls to see and unnamed DJ at a hot club. Definitely a tune to get the night started.
Taken of the Rednose Distrikt's excellent album 'Poes' on Kindred Spirits.

While I'm at it I might as well include a mini-mix (with this tune included) that I put together for a set at the 'above the radar' show at sxsw last week. Its a 30 min (approx.) set...so short but I would say sweet set. Two skips in the set that I put down to computer error and please note that the term 'best deejay' was in no way a reference to my dj skills. I is a blogger not a DJ! ;)

Rakkas

The excellent South Rakkas Crew bring you the superb Mix Up album out on Mad Decent.

This tune is a rocking dancehall/electro/Miami bass/303 fueled musical adventure.
I cannot stop putting this on, turned up super loud.
I think there's definitely a  bit of 303 from Josh Wink's 'Higher State of Consciousness' in there, along with a beat at one stage that sounds a little like Dizzie Rascals 'Fix Up Look Sharp' and also what sounds like a millisecond of Chaka Khan's 'I Feel For You'.
But maybe I'm wrong!
Tell me if I am or if you hear anything else in there.

Rustie

So I'm a bass fanatic (in case you haven't noticed).
Can't get enough of the stuff in all honesty. It can shake my insides out and back again for all I care. Don't know where I picked up this little habit that I've got but its one that I don't intend to recover from. Now, my family and friends will tell you that I'm a tad deaf and as result can talk a bit loud sometimes (sorry ya'll).
Is this due to bass tones in my headphones? I have yet to see conclusive evidence to indicate as such so until such time....
Anyways, today I splashed out and got, with some Christmas money from Santa, a set of kick ass expensive headphones that I've been checking out for a while now. Every year or so I upgrade my headphones and each time I do listening to music (old and new) is just that little more fun as you hear sounds that otherwise were faint impressions in my ears.
Of course, if you have new earphones you need some good new music to go along with it. ;)

So, this is it. Out on Stuff Records.
Rustie who has had "his name uttered in the same breath as electronic luminaries Modeselektor and Flying Lotus and.... has been hailed as an electronic maverick of the highest order, Rustie marries the energy of hyphy with the low slung bass of dubstep while straddling the stuttering swagger of European electronica with the greatest of ease."

Boomkat Review:

"The production here is nothing short of TOWERING, double weight bass drops and sharp edits coupled with a filthy swing that permeates every moment of each one of the 5 tracks here with a primordial brilliance that's just too good to take in over one sitting."

Mixmag Review

"Crunked-up and dubby Scots electro : A kind of north-of-the-border equivalent to London 's great Werkdiscs, Stuff have been pioneering crunchy hip-hop-infused electro in Glasgow. Here, Rustie channels the spirit of Timbaland at his maddest and best....with an extra British, druggy, clubby twist, with sirens and other bendy sounds out the yin yang. Cracking stuff. "

Off the 'Jagz The Smack' EP this also one of the best covers I've seen in a long time.

All hail!

From the introduction of this song I think you can just feel that something is coming to rock your world.
Jellybass (coming to melt a sub near you) are a force to be reckoned with when it comes to bass so you better have your system all tuned up. Not only do they bass but they deliver it all wrapped and intertwined with rythms, melodys and lots of soul.
This is what Under Your Nose had to say about the album and i tend to agree: "10 tracks of pure low level bliss is whats on offer and each one had its own little theme."

Best review I've seen so far has got to be this from Jo Daley
"I’m listening to this for the first time and it’s Tuesday afternoon, around tea time. Kids are walking home from school, settling down to Blue Peter and I’ve got this up to ear-bleeding volume. With closed eyes, I'm wishing I was in a kitchen at a house party, dancing on the worktops. The climax in this song transports me to a 30s swing club, filled with ravers. Jellybass will make you move like a human water bed. They’ll make you want to dress up and dance like a fool. It's music for turning up loud and playing to your friends, just to see their faces light up and heads start bobbing when the songs reach their dramatic peaks. This is better than good, this is godlike goodness. Get it, go out and turn to jelly."

Buy this album, turn it up and get wobbling!

Give It Again

The best term that I have heard for this tune comes from Gilles Peterson who called it "a bad bwoy tune".
Nuff said Gilles.
A  top tune from Overtone that gets a killer remix by one of my favourite acts around, Inverse Cinematics, this brings with it a dirty rolling bassline,  some fine futurefunk sonics, and feet stomping tech-dub to get the dancefloor going.

From Redbud's page fro the release:
"Redbud's 9th release "Give it again" hails from an up and coming Lithuanian-based producer, Paulius Kilbauskas. Dubbed by some as the "hottest producer on the eastern bloc", Paulius has been producing as Overtone since February 2004. His wide-ranging electronic music style embraces all elements of funky beats: dub, drum'n'bass, hip hop, breaks etc. Already causing a stir amongst European and stateside beatmakers, this electronic dancefloor tune kicks off with moody, dark synths and modulated voices, bursting into heavy, rugged dub steppa beats. The track also features another Lithuanian native -MC Second Man on the mic, delivering his signature ragga style vocals."

Between My Sheets

Artist: The East Coast Boogiemen
Tune: Between My Sheets (ECB Broken Beats)

So I thought I had posted this when I got it a few months back but I guess not.
Opening up with such seduction, broken beats and a dirty bassline your attention is grabbed from the get go. This tune has such great energy to it and doesn't cease with constant introduction of new sounds throughout the build ups and break downs.
