shake it up

Ghislain_poirier
had the great pleasure of hanging out with ghislain poirier in dublin last night before his show in dublin's transmission club night at the button factory. this was my first night there and while i reckon the button factory is a great venue now (as oppossed to when it was the temple bar music centre) i didn't know what to expect from the night itself with regard to the crowd, etc.
i arrived between the dvd recording of some indie band's show and the transmission night. as the crowds changed from people in tight hipspter jeans to looser clothes and more of a party feel i felt that the warm-up dj's were really good with lots of great party style techno but a sound that was perhaps not right for ghislain's deep bass and inclinations to dancehall. needless to say we were all (including ghislain) wondering as to how he could approach this.
as the last techno tune faded out to a massive 'rewind' the layers of bass started to flow into a rolling bassline that didn't stop for the night. with a change from straight four to the floor dance moves to swaying and bouncing to the massive thumps some of the crowd got turned away but i'd say 80% stayed and they were true movers and shakers. what a fun night! this goes out to my mate mitul who had his eyes opened to this sound and to a japanese dude who was there totally loving it.
cheers to transmission and ghislain for a top night.

great stuff hearing from mr.poirier today with a tip on this top digi-electro dancehall tune from sidot (one half of playdoe) featuring teba shumba both of whom hail from South Africa. Much thanks mate and see you soon!

Also good for me is that Ghislain is playing in Dublin next month at Transmission on Novemeber 15th. More bass oddessy sessions for me after I indulge in some Roots Manuva action on the 1st at The Academy (no mention of the show on their site but tickets available here).

And, to make up for the severe lack of posts of late (serious lack of broadband partially being the reason), heres another one for you bass junkies.

you know me

Roisin
Róisín Murphy comes to town in December so I'll definitely be going along to check out her show. While some reviews of her live shows have been hit or miss the thoughts of  "slithery rhythms, percussion-laced Ibizan beats and muscular disco-funk..." are so enticing when delivered by the sultry Murphy.
Hot on the heels of working with Roots Manuva on his new album, here's a bass heavy Toddla T remix of 'you know me better'.

Rakkas

The excellent South Rakkas Crew bring you the superb Mix Up album out on Mad Decent.

This tune is a rocking dancehall/electro/Miami bass/303 fueled musical adventure.
I cannot stop putting this on, turned up super loud.
I think there's definitely a  bit of 303 from Josh Wink's 'Higher State of Consciousness' in there, along with a beat at one stage that sounds a little like Dizzie Rascals 'Fix Up Look Sharp' and also what sounds like a millisecond of Chaka Khan's 'I Feel For You'.
But maybe I'm wrong!
Tell me if I am or if you hear anything else in there.

Sweetest Taboo

Glamma Kid w/ Shola Ama rework Sade's 'Sweetest Taboo'.
Glamma Kid rocks it with his unique style-ruff kutt but smooth as ice while Shola's voice is so sweet and gorgeous.
I think Lovage would certainly agree that this is music to make love to your old lady by.

Hey, you know what, well
Because your love is the sweetest taboo
Let me take you 'pon a secret rendezvous
Yo shortie, shortie don't change the issue
We will meet at the same place and the venue
True you glamorous and you, you gorgeous
You all ah make big man crash up dem Lexus
Click off the light, you got the vibe
Girl you all make me kick off on me Air Nike.

What a classic line "Girl you all make me kick off on me Air Nike".

Kiss & Tell

Each year as summer starts to creep into my days I can't help but to start listening to more reggae and dancehall. The sounds just conjour up images of sunny days and hot sweaty nights filled with sub-bass rolling riddims. Over at DilatedChoonz they've been knocking out some super reggae sounds the last few days so I'm gonna try and stick with some dancehall for everyone here.

Just got this tune by Danielle Senior, produced by Curtis Lynch and released on Necessary Mayhem.
"Curtis Lynch Jnr has been producing and writing music seemingly all his life with a string of credits that read like the international whose who of reggae music including credits with the likes of : Beenieman, Mr. Vegas, Collie Buddz, Elephant Man, Sly & Robbie all top ten artists / Producers who have helped forge one of the most talked about producers of our generation. He also achieved production work on the worldwide double platinum Gorillaz album."

Nice and simple with a lovely synth based melody, sweet harmonies from some angelic sounding ladies that make me melt. I am assuming that this is Danielle Senior singing and I think I am on in love! This tune is really spot on production wise showing that we can expect so much more from Mr. Lynch and Neccessary Mayhem-bring it.

As per my policy I have tried to find a website so I can email Curtis Lynch/ Necessary Mayhem but all I can see is a myspace page for Curtis and it doens't have an option to add/message.
If you know or represent him please let me know how I can contact him.

Rude Boy Love

Two great dancehall tunes for you this evening. I just love dancehall-its so innovative with mutli layered beats in the riddims, poetic lyrics, melodies that swirl around your head and of course the sexiness of the movement behind it is good too. ;-)
I usually try and avoid posted songs posted elsewhere recently but I reckon that this is worth it as it may have been missed by many as the first tune is from the excellent post over on musiclikedirt with their excellent top 101 songs of 2006. That is 'Spice' with 'Pinchers' and the song 'Rude Boy Love' (#23) and the second is from the amazing collection called King Jammy's-Selector Choice series and its 'Lovers Question' by Leroy Gibbons. You will be seeing more tunes from this series also.

Artist: Spice
Tune: Rude Boy Love (feat. Pinchers)
A massive tune on the stage show riddim and stage show it is. This tune just drives you along and builds you up with some great steel drums and cleverly produced sounds effects that lift you off your chair and get you moving around .

Download 02_rude_boy_love_feat. Pinchers).mp3

Artist: Leroy Gibbons
Tune: Lovers Question
A great dancehall tune with the low and mellow heavenless riddim with an amazing rocksteady style song laid over it.
Beautiful.

Get that money so you are hot like we.

Two tracks today-both dancehall rockers.

Artist: Cecile
Tune: Hot Like We.

Too much! I got this a few weeks ago off the Ode To A Dying DJ compilation by Mark Rae( pretty execellent comp by the way).
This is a guaranteed floor filler/ head turner! A dancehall track that has a solid, off kilter beat, slightly faster than most dancehall I listen to but this track just pulls you in. Cecile has this way of singing at you that is mesmerizing- you just want more!

Please note: this track is taken from a mix CD so it starts off being mixed in from another track and it cuts off at around 4 minutes. Sorry, but I can't locate a 'pure' track anywhere.
Download 03_hot_like_we.mp3

Artist: Ms.Thing
Tune: Get That Money

From the superb compilation of dancehall, hip-hop crossover tracks, Nice Up The Dance,  from Soul Jazz Records. I picked this up used in Amoeba and it is one of my best purchases over the past few years.
This tune is like Hot Like We but a bit slower. This has the same driving style to the beat with Ms.Thing throwing out her slang like there is no tomorrow. A very sexy and fun tune. Another
guaranteed floor filler/ head turner for your next party.

Someday I'll get to Jamaica to experience hot reggae/dancehall straight from it's source! :-)

RuffKuts

Artist: Johnny Osbourne
Tune: Budy Bye
Album: 600% Dynamite.

The sixth installment of the % Dynamite series from the excellent Soul Jazz records brings us this absolutely rocking dancehall cut that just bowls me over. With an intro that most definitely grabs your attention and gets you prepared for a swinging bassline taken (sampled ;-) from the tune below. This bassline and beat is a dancehall classic and Johnny Osbourne just adds to it by getting the party started with his 'call to arms' to the crowd.

Download 12_budy_bye.mp3

Artist: Wayne Smith
Tune: Under Me Sleng Teng
Album: Dancehall Roots (The Birth of Ragga Dancehall & Digital Reggae)

This compilation  is a double CD of sweet digital dancehall tracks that comes with an excellent booklet. Produced by King Jammy, Under Me Sleng Teng is probably one of the most widely known dancehall tracks because of the many variations on the bassline in other tracks. I first heard this tune in Cafe Irie in dublin, Ireland (highly recommended sandwiches by the way, if you are ever in the neighbourhood) and of course, me being the bass junkie that I am, ran to find out what this was.
You can't help but to start swinging and swaying along to this tune and what a way to drive through the day than to have some serious dancehall boomin' in your jeep.
