gonna be shot for saying this but never really paid much attention to the clash over the years. obviously knew some of their more famous stuff and picked up on various samples along the way (beats international and MIA). so, back at a mates and dancing around like loons and he chucks this on.
great bassline that is super groovy and perfect for moving to. definitely a disco feel to the whole sound.

some sunday music then by alizee, a pop starlet from france (well, corsica really). stumbled across this tune a while back (can't recall where) and its quite cheesy and poppy but irresistible also.
apparently (as per eikipedia) the song tells "tell, in personal and metaphorical manner, of a young model under the guidance of Andy Warhol, possibly inspired by real-life story of Edie Sedgwick. The song ends with a reiteration of how she foolishly believed Andy that she was the most beautiful model of all".

this tune (via donnaslut...well recommended!) goes out to a very dear friend who today left dublin to go travel around the world for the next while. i was delighted to have been her roomie for the past 6 months in dublin.
i ( as well as many others) are sad to see stef go but know that she will have a blast and to return with tales of many adventures. 

I think this particular saying is apt after the delay's in stef's departure but say this as i wonder if she is still in dublin due to snow elsehwere...

galactic fun

stepping it up a little from the last post but equally as beautiful in my mind.
first heard of dam funk back in july over at the  ridiculously good 'another night on earth' where chris rightly said about dam funk "California's Dam-Funk is creating timeless music. I'd say if he's making music right this minute it's sure to be timeless."

this one goes out to my mate sam who not only dj's in the ukiyo bar and tripod (with  dj bubbles) every weekend. shameless plug for him but i'm trying to nudge him into starting to write for cubikmusik. he has a superb collection that never ceases to impress me with a few absolute gems, including some fine edits by a group in dublin (their name escapes me).
well i reckon this absolute gem would be something that sam would be into and if you're into also leave a comment to give sam a nudge also. ;)

dam funk creates boogie funk that has so many sweet southern california sound elements with heavy synth, crisp kicking beats that just almost knocks you over.
Out on stones throw. now i just wish someone would bring him to ireland for a show...

My apologies for the lack of posts of late. What with moving back to Ireland, playing catch-up with friends and family while partying quite a lot I haven't found the time or inclination to go out to track down new tunes. Tonight is different as I am trying to take a break from the madness and to maybe even get an early night. :)

With that said I just came across a great compilation on Compost. 'Elaste, volume2: space disco'. Compiled by Tom Wieland (7 Samurai) this is a trip into the world of, yes, you got it...space disco. I have to say though that this compilation knocks the proverbial socks off of most of the other compilations doing the rounds nowadays. According to Wieland “Most of these titles were fairly unknown when they were released, some became almost famous, and this is what this compilation is about: lost space disco gems and soulful Euro-boogie,” This is certainly filled with tunes that are somewhat less spacey and seem to be more dancefloor orientated with a keen eye on some old school flavours along with interesting interpretations such as the tune posted here.

This tune reflects some of the sounds of 7 Samurai with its disctinctive funky reggae hook and pace that is offset with some pretty trippy sounds that will have your head shooting into space as your body holds it down on the dancefloor.

I'd also recommend 'GI' by Panoptikum (another Wieland act) which is pure acid fun and the Rufus/Chaka Khan classic 'Ain't Nobody' that gets the Frankie Knuckles hallucinogenic remix treatment. I can't see it on any of the digial versions of the comp. but 20 Jazz Greats delivers the dub version for your listening pleasure.

Picked this up today from Simian Mobile Disco's playlist on iTunes. Had never heard this tune before but its been around since '84 (or '83 depending on what you're reading). I'm generally not a major fan of a lot of 80's electronic/electro from Europe but this has such a killer deep ass bassline that won't fail to have your dancefloor swaying.

While Europe had "Sunshine Reggae" as an A-side and "White Horse" as a B-side to what was originally a double A-side single 7" release, the US simply reversed it all. Sire Rec's and Seymour Stein had signed Laid Back up on the reputation of "Sunshine Reggae" but soon found out that "White Horse" was hitting clubs. Next up was a 12", including a remix by Shep Pettibone, that helped launch the then-nascent 12" DJ / Dance vinyl format. By now, "White Horse" rivals the James Brown track "Funky Drummer" in terms of sample uses.

the air we breathe

As I drove around this morning in the cold and misty morning here in Austin, my head fuzzy from a hangover, I found solace in this song. I'd never listened to, our heard of, The Figurines who describe their sound as '21st century cuttin edge Danish melody core'. This is the Prins Thomas disco mix of their song The Air We Breathe' off their release 'Hey Girl' that is out in advance of their upcoming LP. Out on Strange Feeling Records which is an offshott of Ben Watt's Buzzin' Fly label.

moonlight

I am delighted to have gotten this pre-release today from Ork Recordings via my mate Neil who is a regular commenter here on cubikmusik. This is a quality release that showcases not just great Irish sounds but some excellent remixing skills by Lmd64. 

Lets back up a little though as Ork has a story that is close to my heart as they are very closely aligned to Fish Go Deep which was started by Greg Dowling and Shane Johnson who ran Sweat at that old favourite haunt of mine, and many, many others, Sir Henry's in Cork (see previous post here). Along with Fish Go Deep, Mark O' Sullivan who is based in Sweden, started Ork. This is their (short) story: "We're based in Cork, in Ireland. And Stockholm, in Sweden. Cork is the European Capital of Culture for 2005 so, with the help of the organising commitee, we set up the label as an outlet for producers from both cities. The plan is to release exciting electronic music from new and established artists." The label's early releases have been championed by heavyweight deejays such as Rob Mello, Laurent Garnier, Charles Webster and Kerri Chandler.

Ork Recording's digital offshoot returns in March 2008 with a double headed disco-rockin' monster. It's an all-Ireland affair: rising Dublin producer Lmd64 takes on two of Cork's finest combos - Stanley Super 800
and Exit: Pursued By A Bear - turning them upside down and shaking their funky pocket change all over the dancefloor.

Stanley Super 800 was nominated for the Choice Music Award for their 2007 album, Louder and Clearer, Stanley Super 800 have spent the last five years gatecrashing all the best parties, showing off their "sterling pop chops, where demented low fi, rag time weirdness and experimentalism flourish. Stanley Super 800 channel the universal underdog." (Hot Press)

Lmd64's musical journey begins in the mid 80's, Liam Dunne began programming bloops and squiggles on his Commodore 64, while dancing around the room to Herb Alpert & John Barry on badly scratched vinyl.Technology finally caught up with Liam and his ever evolving collection of synths and, after numerous releases as Aciinoid, he began producing material under his Lmd64 alias. Lmd64 productions reflect musical influences closer to Liam's roots.Shades of Lalo Schifrin, Ennio Morricone and Cerrone feature strongly, with atmospheric disco touches, layered bass and guitar, orchestral string flourishes and plenty of moog synth style action.

This tune is the dub remix of 'Moonlight' by Stanley Super 800 and it has a deep and low funky disco bass sound that is offset with some brilliantly shimmering electro synths and strings that send shivers down my spine. On the flip side is the Exit: Pusued By A Bear track, 'In The Dim Blue Light', that is slightly more dark with a feeling of Underworld. Again, remixed excellently by Lmd64 with some signature elements that are meticulously crafted. I highly recommend you check out this release.

I've said somewhere here in the past that I try and avoid posting multiple tunes by the same artist and I think that Inverse Cinematics are the only artist to have been posted twice (here and here).
well, after I got this tune tonight, I found out that this is Danilo Plessow from Inverse Cinematics so although it doesn't really count it is certainly a testament to the wonderment of these guys skills.

Here we have Raw Cuts #2  from Motor City Drum Ensemble, released on Faces Records. More disco and funk than house but definitely one to get the dancefloor going with a down and dirty bassline that just rocks my world.

Some stuff said about this release:
Karl Injex (Rude Movements / NYC) - 'As implied by the title, these dancefloor weapons are RAW, touching on the essence of Detroit with dirty drums, ruff basslines and that signature hand-cut feel pioneered by the likes of KDJ, Theo Parrish and crew..' . Mad Mats (Raw Fusion / Stockholm) - 'This shit totally blew me away, real Detroit house at its best'

Another Story

A massive track tonight that I dedicate to Chris over at Another Night On Earth who consistently delivers on choice tunes. I think he'll appreciate this.

This is Lee Douglas coming at you from Brooklyn, NY and my gosh has he delivered a track that can only be described as an anthem. Coming in at just over 9 mins. 'New York Story' has low organ sounds that are reminiscent of Rattatat with a beautiful disco bassline, a solid beat, church bells,  and cosmic synths that will put your hair on end.

Would've loved to have heard this while out and about and dancing back in the day-the crowd would be going crazy!

Lost in Music was the alternative title for this post 'cos no matter what you say there are few feelings as good as being in that state and this tune certainly gets me there.

I just got this tune tonight, a totally amazing remix of Blondie's Heart of Glass.
This track just blows me away- starting off very minimal, it just builds and builds with all kinds off electro beeps and clicks and then lifts you up and soars you away with that beautiful voice getting you set to rock your bootie off.
If you are gonna take a classic and improve on it...this is how you do it kids.

Shake n Dance

Ok- I have spent the evening gathering up a load of great new tunes and I wanna post them all but can't. This is my first post tonight but I expect some more later on.
This does happen every now and again when I get a tune and just fall in love. It just hits all the right spots for me! For anyone who enjoyed Boogie Beat back in April I dedicate this to you.
From Amplified Orchestra on the excellent Dutch label, 4Lux.Shake n Dance (Instrumental) is a rockin', slowed down, masterful piece of music that is disco/soul/funk inspired with a house beat that just swings the night away. Goes to show that these guys just have the funk in their bones.

I usually don't post more than two tunes from a compilation but I just reckon that as about 60-70% of my visitors will not have heard of the crew that delivers this one I want to get more than usual out from it.
Um, Um! From the rockin' compilation brought to you by the superb crew at Electric Chair in Manchester. Here is the deal with the Manchester sound that I have eluded to before when mentioning Aim, Grand Central, etc. The term that can be used is Northern Sulphuric Soul, and really that  is....."music with feeling, encompassing diva disco, future spaced freaky hip hop/ r'n'b, afro, Detroit techno, mashups, house with a feeling, decadent 2-step, bad breaks and dancehall shenanigns."

A too sexy tune with a low and slinky bassline that will have shivers running up and down your spine.

This tune really defies definition....think future disco, with an old-school funk beat, slightly speeded up miami bass along with a tacky porn soundtrack and you might come close.
