Eggsample

Why is it that a tune is released and its takes 3-4 years before you hear it!
I guess sometimes its just worth waiting for.

What a tune this is from Ye:Solar, released in 2004 on Vinyl Vibes (also home to the excellent Curv)
""Berlins freshest trio at the moment" (soultrade.de) famous for their high-energy live performances, team up with Sonar Kollektiv´s dj/producer EVA BE to provide a huge club-event with fresh live music and a stirring blend of jazz/house and elektro!  While the crowd is dancing "like they were on trampolines" the three Ye:Solars make you forget that they're basically a trio with rhodes, doublebass and drums on stage. Together with EVA BE they remix themselves, switch from vinyl to live-music and even provide a video-show with freaked out visuals..."

Get me to one of those shows!
This tune kicks off with a nice beat accompanied by some oddball sounds and immediately your curiosity is piqued. Then you start to notice your body just kinda bouncing slightly and as you realise this the double bass gets going and you are hooked. Head bopping, arms swaying and your smiling at the beautiful keys that set it all off.
The songs takes a few slight twists and turns throughout its 7 minutes with the same foundation providing a backdrop to some tightly introduced influences (definitely a reggae vibe in there) that keep you with the flow just right.

Turns out that the song uses a sample from a tune by Inverse Cinematics who I mentioned in  a post earlier this week.

Unusual & Electric

You know, sometimes the story behind the music is almost as good as the music itself.
Almost.

I wish I could remember where I came across Unusual & Electric about two weeks as I am super chuffed that I did. Upon checking out their tunes I discovered that I couldn't find them for purchase in the States. I emailed U&E and asked if they knew of anywhere I could buy them here. They offered to send me both their EPs and they also ok'd me posting a tune here.
Today, the package arrived and not only had I gotten the two EPs but along with it there were 3 mixes by Adam from U&E (that have super designs as part of the packaging) as well as one of the coolest posters that I've ever seen (now happily on my office wall). The designs are by iyrie so check out their site for some cool work.

So-much thanks to Adam (and Mark) for sending me this great music and artwork. Keep making choice tunes and making these connections mate. Nice one. Next time I'm in London we'll be grabbing some beers and a sound system!

Tonight's tune is called 'st. john street dub #2' . It was a toss up between this and 'slumber zirkus' which is definitely a must have for a night out dancing with your mates. All in all I'd say that these tunes would play massively well on a club system with their solid bass beats but just may be more suited to a bbq or house party, where the dancing goes on into the wee hours of the morning.
st. john street dub #2 is just so catchy and tight. A really sweetly produced combination of reggae, dub, and  solid housey beat with the reliable hats keeping your eye on the ball. ;-)
Here's what Mr.Sugardaddy, Kris Needs, had to say about it in Mixmag "a stripped-down-filth-house vamp somewhat recalling early 90s Leftfield/Sabres in steamy underground club mode".

Lightning Head

I remember the first time I heard of Rockers Hi-Fi was when !K7 released their Rocker's Hi-Fi DJ Kicks
which is my mind is the best in the series along with that of Kruder & Dorfmeister. I had the pleasure of seeing them play live in Dublin about 6-7 years ago and it was a top show. unfortunately they didn't play 'Transmission Central' (see below) despite my heckling! ;-)
After moving to the States I then came across the 'Lightning Head' album, Studio Don by Bigga Bush and loved the sounds. Lots of dub and reggae influences but with a more Latin and Caribbean feel with steel drums and batucada rhythms. This is an album that I reckon flew under the radar and never really got the attention it deserved.

Cheers,
Cubik

Give It Again

The best term that I have heard for this tune comes from Gilles Peterson who called it "a bad bwoy tune".
Nuff said Gilles.
A  top tune from Overtone that gets a killer remix by one of my favourite acts around, Inverse Cinematics, this brings with it a dirty rolling bassline,  some fine futurefunk sonics, and feet stomping tech-dub to get the dancefloor going.

From Redbud's page fro the release:
"Redbud's 9th release "Give it again" hails from an up and coming Lithuanian-based producer, Paulius Kilbauskas. Dubbed by some as the "hottest producer on the eastern bloc", Paulius has been producing as Overtone since February 2004. His wide-ranging electronic music style embraces all elements of funky beats: dub, drum'n'bass, hip hop, breaks etc. Already causing a stir amongst European and stateside beatmakers, this electronic dancefloor tune kicks off with moody, dark synths and modulated voices, bursting into heavy, rugged dub steppa beats. The track also features another Lithuanian native -MC Second Man on the mic, delivering his signature ragga style vocals."

One night in Tokyo.....

Artist: Colder
Tune: One Night in Tokyo
Album: Again

I am not the biggest fan in the world of dub but this is a futuristic take on dub that kicks ass.
Much thanks to Pat for sending me this CD/DVD for my b'day a few years ago.
This track kicks off with a city soundscape that really does put you in Tokyo. After about a minute the train arrives and away you go with a driving bassline, cosmic flicks and a great take on a reggae piano loop for company.
This is tight tune- not all cheery but a great track to go driving with.
