good lord

Kormac

Appropriately enough what with it being Easter Sunday today (Happy Easter Mum), Scribble Records next release comes from Kormac and is entitled the “Good Lord EP”. After the success of his first release “Scratch Marchin”, he’s back again with another installment of his trademark hip-hop and Jazz mash up sound. This EP takes things to the next level by fusing live players, a barbershop quartet  and banjos. This year Kormac has concentrated on bringing his live show to the stage and this record is a true reflection of where he’s at and where he’s headed.

To celebrate the release there is a release party at Crawdaddy in Dublin tonight. For those of us that can't make it we can make do with one of the tracks, Join Together, and an interview with Kormac courtesy of  Beat Traders Podcast.

How has the last year been for you since the release of your first EP?
Really good. It was a big surprise for me that the EP sold as well as it did and that a lot of DJs who I knew and respected picked up on it and played it out. I get a lot of messages through Myspace from listeners and DJs all over the world telling me they enjoy it or they play it out etc. which is still fun ...I've spent the last year doing quite a bit in the studio and putting a lot of work into making the live show as good as I can.

We've seen and heard great things about your live show, can you tell us a little about how you transform your productions to the stage?
I'm quite lucky in that everyone in the band I started working with are really into it and are all great musicians. When I finish new tracks I send them on to all the guys and I sit down with each person individually and we go through it. Each player usually starts off playing the parts I've written and it develops from there. The guys always have ideas of their own which is a great thing and we work them into the tracks between us. It's really important to me that each player brings their own style to the music and express themselves within it.

We then all pile into the Scribble studio and start bashing it out (and taking the p* out of each other... ) For my parts I play a lot of the elements from the records using turntables, a soft-sampler and a keyboard. I've also just enrolled a banjo player for the next batch of gigs which I'm quite excited about.

Which performance of 2007 did you enjoy the most, and why?
It would have to be the Electric Picnic show. It was the first time we'd performed with the Barbershop singers and Eoin, our trumpet player plus Steve Egri did a great job on visuals. I was amazed at how full the tent was and at the unbelievable response we got.

What's in store for your next EP on Scribble records, and how have things developed?
The next release is called the Good Lord EP. I put a load of work into this record as I really didn't want to release an EP that was overly similar to what I'd done before. I also wanted to get some more live playing in. The record is so-titled as I spent a good few months listening to a lot of old gospel music and field recordings from 20/30s America so, sample-wise, there's a strong element of that in there, particularly in Join Together and Good Lord. I have my take on house music (Kormac's House) and did a full version of Jubilee. Some people might know this as our outro music from the live shows. I've also done a little interlude called "behind locked doors."

Can you give us a description of what to expect in your Beat Traders Podcast?
Pretty much what you get when you see me DJing out. I've tried to include all the styles of music I like playing and tried to put it all together in a cohesive way. I've included a few cheeky edits I've done myself (Dire Straits and Fred Astaire Remixes) There's a clap your Hands Say Yeah/Moloko thing I did a while back and lots of artists you might not expect like AC/DC, Beck, The Beta Band etc. All the intros/interludes are custom made too....

Are there any plans for an album project in the near future, and what direction will it take?
Absolutely, it's something I'm thinking about quite a bit at the minute but at the same time I don't just want to run with the first 12 tracks I do or anything.... Direction-wise I'll be looking to cover a lot of ground musically and incorporate lots of my influences. Ideally I'd like to get an album finished this year. I've already started on a few new bits, one of which (Hissyfit) I'll be playing out during DJ sets from this week.

Can you give us an idea of some of the music you've been listening to over the last year and what's been influencing your productions?
As mentioned above I got well into the whole early gospel/blues thing, people like The Staple Singers, Harmonising Four and The Golden Gate Quartet. Everyone should hear also John and Alan Lomax's recordings. Currently, I'm really diggin people like Jimmy Lunceford, the Jazz + Milk stuff, Lack of Afro, Rube, Kids in Tracksuits, Martina Topley Bird, that new Gruff Rhys/Boom Bip project Neon Neon and some jackin' house and electro stuff. On the home front I've been listening to some new stuff from Simon Resoul and B.D.I. There are very few types of music I don't listen to...

You've worked on a film soundtrack last year, any plans to explore these area's further?
Yeah I did some music for a short called Magic on RTE and the soundtrack for a documentary called Rugby Nomad which was on Setanta. It's something I'll definitely do again as I learned loads from it and really enjoyed it, but time-wise it's not far off writing an album and I need to get my own record done at the minute. That said, I'd be into writing individual pieces of music for films etc.

For any budding producers at home can you give them an idea of the kit you use for producing and useful methods you employ?
Sure, I use Pro Tools 7 synced with Reason 4. I love writing with Reason as I'm quick with the samplers and it allows me to audition stuff pretty rapidly. I generally sample from turntables into Pro Tools and then either arrange the audio in PT or throw it into samplers in Reason. I record all the live stuff into PT as well using AKG, Nymann and Shure mics and some analog pre-amps/compressors. When the song is finished I will get most of the stuff back into Pro Tools and mixdown from there.

For people new to production I'd offer two pieces of advice a) learn as many keyboard shortcuts as you can and b) don't get obsessed with having all the newest kit and best gear, you're far better off knowing your chosen kit/software inside-out.

Finally, whats your ethos on music and life in general?
"If it sounds good, it is good"

Super Extra

Sebp

Last night this band won the Choice Music Prize's 'Album of the Year' award and it is rightly deserved. I'd heard of Super Extra Bonus Party through Nialler and the band got in a touch a little while back to share some more tunes.

Congrats to them all and I hope that 2008 brings more success.
The tune I am posting is the Jape mix of 'Everything Flows' off their EP that is out now that also includes a remix by Cadence Weapon (coming to Austin for SXSW). Great stuff all round as Jape is one of my favourite Irish artists so paired with the sounds of these guys its a superb mix.
You can buy the EP in digital format or get the limited edition blue vinyl! Nice.

I can't wait to check them out live as by the sounds of things is an impassionioned and well delivered performance each and every time.

moonlight

Stanley_super_800 I am delighted to have gotten this pre-release today from Ork Recordings via my mate Neil who is a regular commenter here on cubikmusik. This is a quality release that showcases not just great Irish sounds but some excellent remixing skills by Lmd64.

Lets back up a little though as Ork has a story that is close to my heart as they are very closely aligned to Fish Go Deep which was started by Greg Dowling and Shane Johnson who ran Sweat at that old favourite haunt of mine, and many, many others, Sir Henry's in Cork (see previous post here). Along with Fish Go Deep, Mark O' Sullivan who is based in Sweden, started Ork. This is their (short) story: "We're based in Cork, in Ireland. And Stockholm, in Sweden. Cork is the European Capital of Culture for 2005 so, with the help of the organising commitee, we set up the label as an outlet for producers from both cities. The plan is to release exciting electronic music from new and established artists." The label's early releases have been championed by heavyweight deejays such as Rob Mello, Laurent Garnier, Charles Webster and Kerri Chandler.

Ork Recording's digital offshoot returns in March 2008 with a double headed disco-rockin' monster. It's an all-Ireland affair: rising Dublin producer Lmd64 takes on two of Cork's finest combos - Stanley Super 800
and Exit: Pursued By A Bear - turning them upside down and shaking their funky pocket change all over the dancefloor.

Stanley Super 800 was nominated for the Choice Music Award for their 2007 album, Louder and Clearer, Stanley Super 800 have spent the last five years gatecrashing all the best parties, showing off their "sterling pop chops, where demented low fi, rag time weirdness and experimentalism flourish. Stanley Super 800 channel the universal underdog." (Hot Press)

Lmd64 Lmd64's musical journey begins in the mid 80's, Liam Dunne began programming bloops and squiggles on his Commodore 64, while dancing around the room to Herb Alpert & John Barry on badly scratched vinyl.Technology finally caught up with Liam and his ever evolving collection of synths and, after numerous releases as Aciinoid, he began producing material under his Lmd64 alias. Lmd64 productions reflect musical influences closer to Liam's roots.Shades of Lalo Schifrin, Ennio Morricone and Cerrone feature strongly, with atmospheric disco touches, layered bass and guitar, orchestral string flourishes and plenty of moog synth style action.

This tune is the dub remix of 'Moonlight' by Stanley Super 800 and it has a deep and low funky disco bass sound that is offset with some brilliantly shimmering electro synths and strings that send shivers down my spine. On the flip side is the Exit: Pusued By A Bear track, 'In The Dim Blue Light', that is slightly more dark with a feeling of Underworld. Again, remixed excellently by Lmd64 with some signature elements that are meticulously crafted. I highly recommend you check out this release.

Once

Update: 02/24/2008.

Just watched the Oscars and saw Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova accept the Oscar for best song. I am thoroughly delighted. Fair dues to everyone involved in the movie and especially Glen and Marketa.

Watching the trailer for the movie Once is moving to my emotions in both a positive and negative way. I am so happy to see such an achievement in film come out from my home country. Its a film that tells a compelling story  and is accompanied by amazing music.  At the same time I can see so much of the Ireland that I miss (people, places, feelings, characteristics, accents) in the movie that it amplifies my homesickness

I read about Once in the NYTimes this weekend, and the story behind the making of it is pretty cool, almost like it was fate to get these people together to make the movie. Here is some of what David Browne had to say.
"...tells the story of a busker... who meets a young Eastern European pianist ...on the streets of Dublin. The two become friends and collaborators; although each is in the midst of a troubled relationship, they also become potential lovers. As the two characters rehearse and record the busker’s songs, the musical performances are woven into the narrative; instead of being jarring set pieces, they’re part of the plot."

The music was written by Glen Hansard and Damien Rice for the movie and are performed by the leading characters to tell their story. The sounds had been somewhat captured previosuly by The Swell Season who are made up of Hansard (him of the Frames, as mentioned on CubikMusik before), Marketa Irglova (a Czech pianist), Marja Tuhkanen and Bertrand Galen and they made hauntingly beautiful music.

Falling Slowly is one such tune that can be heard in the trailer:

I am also posting this tune here. Truly beautiful.

Please do try and get to see this movie-it does look like a great one.
There are some free screenings happening over the next few days in LA, NY, San Diego and Seattle. RSVP here.

Irish @ SXSW '07

So here in Austin, Texas that time of year is almost on us where we can all overdose in music, film and interactivity. SXSW, that wonderful feast of fun and entertaining business is just around the corner.

There is just so much great music going on it is hard to cover it all so I am gonna cover just the Irish bands that are coming our way. Some I have heard of and some are new to me (being that I am away from home so much). All in all there is some choice Irish music being represented so I am proud of the sounds that will be shared here. One of the nice things about SXSW for Irish bands is that it falls on or around St.Paddy's day so the lads and lassies have one up on other bands from other countries not so fortunate to have such a prominent ad popular national holiday and celebration fall at this time.

Approrpriately enough we start off with the amazing electronic tune from Jape, 'I Spend Too Much Time At Conferences'. Such a simple and sweet track that just oozes emotion. Jape is definitely one of my favourite Irish artists. (Both this and the second tune from the Redneck Manifesto are taken off the brilliant compilation of Irish sounds, 'Kicking Against...')

This tune from the Redneck Manifesto just always gets me. For some reason, and especially when I moved from Ireland to the USA, it seems to sum up the many emotions that you have when you have left your homeland. Nice one lads.

This Frames track comes from their amazing 'For the Birds' album. Love it.
A story about me and The Frames (that they won't remember!). Way back when I was a roadie for another great Irish band, The Castenedas, we played a gig at a college in Dublin with The Frames. As they were a more well known band their beer rider was bigger than ours and so after we played, they went on stage leaving their rider unguarded. Well, as you can imagine, we couldn't resist. Sorry Glen and Co. Gimme a shout in Austin and I'll pay ye back. ;-)

CubikMusik....digs in the archives(2)

Its funny I decided to do this right now as I had been planning on posting about David Kitt this weekend anyways as I have been listening to his song 'Headphones' at lot lately. Tonight, while digging in the archives, I came across the recommendation below from JC in CubikMusik Issue Nine.
I have added 'Headphones' at the bottom of the post- its kinda like two songs in one. :-)
Enjoy.
**********************************************************************************************************************
Artist: David Kitt
Title: Square One
As far as I know, despite bringing his spellbinding live show to the festivals of Europe and a couple of club dates in the US this summer, Kittser (as he's know in his native Dublin) has yet to make the big time outside of Ireland. Square One, his third album, has already gone  went platinum in Ireland and with a bit of luck it will receive the attention it deserves further afield. Kitt, along with fellow travellers such as Damien Rice and Gemma Hayes, is part of a new breed of Irish singer-songwriters pushing the
formula way beyond the usual stereotypical Celtic bard. Square One picks up where The Big Romance left off showcasing Kittser's gentle quirky lyrics of life and love. Favourite tracks for me include Sweet Summer Morning with its aching vibe and the simple pop of Me and My Love (Remix posted below).
