best of '08

Ttap
well folks, the wonderful musical year of '08 has passed and we moved into exciting times for '09. i have tired to stick to a simlar format as the '07 round up by covering some newcomers that I have noticed (not as many this year but I haven't been looking as much either), the best posts from just some of the blogs on my blog roll, year end lists from various places that I frequent, my favorite cubikmusik posts from the year as well as a small list of blogs no longer with us and lastly, my musical highlight of '08.

'08 was a strange year for me with a myriad of personal stuff going on that kept me distracted from cubikmusik at times. despite this i can honestly say that keeping this up also helped me get through some stuff; not just through finding and posting music that makes me feel and think but also through the contacts and friends that i have made as a result of being here. thanks to all who have reached out and i look forward to meeting new friends as time passes.
please do feel free to comment and make suggestins for your own '08 highlights, etc. that i may have missed.
hope you had a great '08 and i wish all of my readers (and passers by) the very best for '09.
cheers,

dream on (fun)

much thanks to my mate Neil for sharing this (via 'Why, That's Delightful'). Brilliant!

"Kill hours and hours of your free time believing that a single piece of good-looking software is your key to stardom. Then, after months of fiddling, end up with a track that sounds exactly like it was stolen wholesale from someone way more talented than you. But from three years ago."

the big one

Over the past year or so the guys and gals over at do512 have become semi-regulars on my weekend ventures out to have beers. Between dropping by the office for impromptu drinks or heading to a party/get together they always know how to show you a good time and are nothing but fun to be around. It sounds like a cliche ('cos it is) but they work and play hard. Its a good thing we have them on our side as sponsors of the 'Above The Radar' party. But, that's not what I am here to talk about.
The do512 crew (and some friends) will be throwing a huge party on Saturday at the do512 compound with lights/visuals in the form of VersaTubes by Rozone Productions and with a kickin' sound system.
Bring it!

sound advice

Austinsound2_logo_7

My mate Doug (and his posse) over at AustinSound is a tireless champion of music that comes out of, and into Austin. AustinSound is a treasure trove of into like album reviews, label profiles and much more including their second compilation of Austin Sounds to accompany you as you plan to take in some of the local acts during SXSW. Nice one!

"The past year has been an impressive one for Austin music. Both Okkervil River and Spoon cemented their place among the cream of the indie crop with excellent releases, Bill Callahan emerged impressively from his smoggy haze, and Octopus Project brought an avalanche of national attention. Ghostland Observatory rode a wave lasers across nearly every major festival to carry them beyond their allotted 15 minutes and Billy Joe Shaver shot some guy in the face outside a bar the week of a Greatest Hits release – that’s how to drum up press, Texas style. So in anticipation of the beloved onslaught of SXSW and to welcome everyone back to Austin, we present our second digital compilation, Sound Advice Vol. II: The Latest Toughs.

Like last year’s offering, we’ve lined up tracks from 21 local artists that we think highlight some of the best Austin has to offer. So what constitutes the Austin Sound these days? As expected, it’s an eclectic sweep, but there are some distinct trends that seem to be emerging. Retro rules, from Sixties-inspired garage rock and pop (The Black, The Strange Boys), to soul (Black Joe Lewis), to Austin’s psychedelic roots (Horse + Donkey). Like most indie bands these days, reputations are being built behind the pure explosive energy of incomparable live shows from the likes of White Denim and Mothfight!, contrasted by the resurgence of melodic shoegaze among artists like the Soldier Thread and Silver Pines. An excellent crop of new young songwriters also continues to bloom, like Graham Weber, Martin Crane’s Brazos, and Jeremy Ballard’s Dark Water Hymnal. All of the tracks have been contributed by the artists, and are available for individual download as well as a complete 1 hour and 17 minute mix below."

I particularly like Belaire's 'You Really Got Me Goin" and am delighted to see Transmography and Monahans featured as they are playing at our party at Trophy's on Thursday.

To download the entire compilation, or individual tracks and to get the artists SXSW show times head on over to AustinSound.

psychoPEDIA, Austin, SXSW and me...

Header_4

I am chuffed that Abbey from psychoPEDIA (and punkphoto.com) invited me to be interviewed to talk about Austin and SXSW as part of their 'my town' series. Of course its just impossible to cover all the great stuff that happens in Austin over SXSW so if you head over and read the interview please do leave a comment for them with anything I missed.

Check it out here.

rich girls

Virgins

One week to go until our 'Above the Radar' party here in Austin. I know, I know, I've been talking about it almost non-stop in my posts but we are so excited to be having this show. Austin is just abuzz with energy right now and every time I talk to someone who is a music head we discover more new parties to go to which means you gotta go back to your schedule and see how you can fit that in! We'll need a vacation after it all!

Anyways-only a few more show related posts left I reckon.
1/2 Alive hail from Vancouver in Canada and run a club night there that all things considered is just brilliant!
Check out photos here and feel the fun!
These guys will be playing on the outside stage between 4.30pm-5pm and will be followed by Ghislain Poirier (more to follow on him).
Definitely come and check them out if you're in town.

Today's tune is by The Virgins (also playing during SXSW-Friday 8pm, Cedar Door) and its called 'Rich Girls' and I am posting today 'cos if you head on over to Blog Fresh Daily* you can hear the 1/2 Alive edit of this pretty cool little song.
Download rich_girls.mp3

*Blog Fresh is one of the sponsors of the 'Above The Radar' party.

Best Irish Music Blog

A big shout out to Nialler9 who was named as Best Irish Music Blog over at the Irish Blog Awards earlier tonight. Fair dues to him as he got to celebrate the 'Super Extra Bonus Party' win at the Choice Music Prize earlier this week (he is great mates with them and did their artwork) and now this.
Well deserved.

Cheers Niall.

Dead Confederate @ Above The Radar

Dead_confederateOh yes....the countdown to SXSW is moving along very nicely. I gotta say there is a buzz in the air here in Austin as more and more shows are announced and everyone starts to try and figure out who they can get to see and make arrangements to catch up with everyone coming through town. I know that I am trying to meet with quite a few people from around the world that I've been in touch with over the years through CubikMusik. We'll be exchanging stories, listening to some lots of tunes and drinking some beers no doubt. Check back here in about a week or so and I'll be posting all the day and night shows that I'll be either checking out or recommending. Where possible I'll include tunes, and showtimes, etc.

Speaking of shows....you can find the weekly Above The Radar party installment over at Blog Fresh Radio this week. My mate Michael over at Sonic Itch Music covers a band that he has a lot of time for. The band are Dead Confederate and they hail from Athens, GA. They'll be headlining the inside stage during 'Above The Radar' and will be on at around 6pm. Oh yeh-and these guys are supporting REM the night before at Stubbs!

I sincerely hope that if you read this blog, or any of the others involved, that you drop by to check out the great music and say hi. Its really great to meet people who know so much about us even if its via our musical tastes. If you can't make it but are in town for SXSW and wanna meetup over some tunes just drop me a line: cubikmusik@gmail.com

Cheers,

pornophony

Pornophony2 A pretty exciting new blog has started up today and it is a great concept and one that I am delighted to be involved in as a judge. Pornophony will offer up songs each week that producers of many means (established, bedoroom, up and coming, etc.) will be able to download a track, and within a week remix and submit that track for judging by a team of judges that is made up of bloggers from around the world.

"That is, every week, producers globally will take centre stage right here on Pornophony for a head-to-head battle against each other to prove who can craft that beat the best. Anything goes. Remix it any way you want. If you want to go insane, you can.

You'll have exactly a week to remix the released sample song (which will be of 'Indie' origins), with your final touches being finished on the following Monday for a panel of judges to decide a winner and comment on the other submissions."

Judges:

  • Loudersoft
  • Rock Sellout
  • Stereobotic
  • Cubikmusik
  • A.M. 180
  • The first track, posted today, is El Perro Del Mar's 'Party'. Grab the tune, or acapella version here and email your submissions to ispinandispin (AT) gmail.com.

    Here are the rules.

    Blogfresh Radio Show

My mate CovertCuriosity and I go back to back over on this week's BlogFreshRadio show and are joined by such fine blogs as GEE WIZZ (Melbourne, AU), THE FINEST KISS (Seattle, WA), IT'S HARD TO FIND A FRIEND (Nashville, TN) and YER MAM! (Manchester, UK) .

It's a Superbowl-caliber show this week, too! We have five excellent music blogs telling us what's new and cool in their worlds. Plus, we play at least two songs by bands who have the word "teenagers" in their name--how often does that happen? Plus two British (Cubik note-should read one British and one Irish) blogger talking about North American hip-hop (go figure). Although, one of them, Cubik Musik, actually lives in Austin, TX. As does Covert Curiosity, who's on the show talking about his hometown's hottest band, Ghostland Observatory. Then, we check in with It's Hard to Find a Friend who tells us about the new Say Hi CD.

Oh, and of course The Blog Fresh Chart! We count down the 10 most blogged-about bands of the week, just to keep you in the loop. And hey, guess who's at #1 this week (we don't bring up what shows we're going to see just to brag--it all comes full circle)? So grab some guac n' chips and have a listen. Don't worry, Randy and Paula won't be performing at our half-time.

    Public Enemy Number One

    From Wired's Listening Post:

Pe_live "Public Enemy frontman Chuck D has been on the cutting edge of online music for years; way back in the year 2000, I posted a column in which he pledged support for Napster and claimed that the record business hurts artists more than file sharing does.  Meanwhile, his RapStation site is still going strong.

In approximately 4 hours, Public Enemy will continue this tradition of online experimentation with a free webcast of tonight's show.  Tune in to SyncLive tonight at 10PM eastern standard time to see Public Enemy's show at the Fillmore in New York, live.

If you sign up for an account, you'll be able to chat with other show goers during the performance.  X-Vandals are opening."

I signed up as Cubik so if you're there say hi. :)
    Cheers

    brother on the side

A whole lot of brotherly (and sisterly) love going on around the music blogsphere right now and I gotta thank Jez over at Innersounds for (a) inviting me to be interviewed for his 'Brothers On The Side' series and (b) his kind words over at my interview.

Brothers On The Side (a nice play on the Cymande tune found here) is basically this idea:

"So I had this thought. Do people really ’surf’ the ‘Net that much anymore? Do they click random links? Aren’t we all too busy for that? (students among us excepted!) And there in my sidebar, my links area, are some of the greatest mp3 blogs that I have found on the Web, and I wondered how I could encourage people to go there. Some of the blogs may already have a massive following, some are smaller with fewer devotees. But all of them I am really proud of, and personally recommend in one of those ‘if you like this, try this’ kind of way. So I decided to ask each blog on my side bar if they wanted to be interviewed / introduce themselves on Innersounds."

Great questions were asked. Not an easy task to get some of those answers, especailly picking one track to kinda tell the CubikMusik story.

Enjoy the unfolding series that I think is going to prove to be very popular.

Cheers Jez. A pleasure to know you mate.

    Wait for Christmas

    You gotta love the Irish!

Wait for Christmas is a campaign that 'is all about getting Tom Waits' classic "Christmas card from a hooker in Minneapolis" to number 1 in time for Christmas in Ireland.'

The idea is " to counter this boring, dull trend. I want to get Tom Waits' "Christmas card from a Hooker in Minneapolis" to number 1 for Christmas.
If you've not heard this song before let me say this before you do - it is the absolute antithesis to what generally gets the Number 1 slot in Ireland nowadays.
For a start it's not a manufactured song sung by a manufactured artist. Secondly it's extremely funny and not a drab, safe ballad. Finally it's actually packed full of real emotion - it's tragic, beautiful and hilarious all at once.
It's absolutely perfect as a protest against everything that's wrong with music today and it even has some real humanity in it to boot.
And let's not beat around the bush - it would also be very enjoyable to hear the song on mainstream radio, or even to hear its title read out as part of a chart line up.
Getting it into the charts will be tough but not impossible. The song is available on iTunes, Eircom's music service and Sony's Connect - all of which are counted in the IRMA charts. Next week will be the one sales need to be made on, so there's a short time frame to get the job done but selling a few thousand songs (that's all that's needed) at around €1 each a pop is more than do-able. The song will need to be purchased online between the 14th and 20th of December in order to do this."

Obviously you have to be in Ireland when purchasing for the sale to count. I am trying to see if there is away around this and will update this post if I get any further info.

Heres a live version of the song:

    The year that was...2007

Update (2) December 9th: Somehow the original post got edited so I am trying to rewrite everything as closely to how I had written it yesterday.

As I wander around the various sites and blogs that I frequent I see that some are doing some format on the 'Best of 2007' lists covering best album, artist, song, etc.
Rather than me trying to pick the bests songs (which for me would be impossible) I am offering  the best posts, etc. from the various blogs that feed me good tunes (as it were) followed by my single best song of 2007.
If you do want a good 'Best of..' list get yourself on over to Nialler9 for his top 25 picks of 2007. Also check out his reader's poll for the best Irish album or EP of 2007. (Results here- I highly recommend you check out Super Extra Bonus Party at #1).

Update (7) December 20th: Nialler has just posted his top 30 albums of 2007.

Update (1) December 9th: Stuart over at Fat Planet just put up his best albums of 2007. Very nice list to be found here.

Update (3) December 11th: Mort over at Chocolate Bobka has his 'The 3 Best Electronic Releases of 2007 (That You May Not Have Heard About)' that you may wanna check out.

Update (4) December 12th: KUT (local National Public Radio affiliate) staffer's picks of best albums of 2007.

My favourite tunes/posts/blogs from this year:

Innersounds for many, many tunes after he went his separate ways from Horse Latitudes, but mainly this one from Coyote.

Speaking of Horse Latitudes, I gotta give a shout-out for the best looking blog out there after their resdesign this year. While getting that done they also managed to move, get married and share lots of great tunes. Always a favourite of mine.

    Best newcomers:
-From a purely mp3/music blog perspective I would have to say Jamila over at Fucking Dance.
Passion for music, life and fun just oozes from the pages.

-Then we have Jim Carroll over at 'On the Record' who covers the world of music and culture from a dizzying array of angles. A top read each day.

    (Very) Honorable mentions for newcomers:

    Chocolate Bobka
    The Dancing Panda
    Audio.Out
(first post was in December '06 but still).
    Cheebah
    State of Shock
    ElectronicAustin
    The Nearest Faraway Place
    I Prefer The Obscure Remix
    Truth and Soul Records Blog
    Get Weird Turn Pro

    Best Austin blogs:
-My mate Mr.Curiosity over at Covert Curiosity. A true gentleman who is like a sponge for new sounds. He really soaks music up like no-one else I know. Had been reading this blog for quite some time and eventually we got talking and discovered that we life about 3 minutes away from each other!. Music blogsphere center of Austin. ;-)
Update (5) December 13th: Speaking of Mr. Curiousity he has just put up his List of 2007 Goodness including best shows.

-Technically not a blog but none-the-less a force to be reckoned with in coverage of the Austin music  scene is Austin Sound. Doug and his merry pranksters deliver a wall of content to anyone interested in whats happening with Austin music.

    Most interesting reads:
Voodoo Funk who I discovered about 2 months ago. Here's the story:
"In the summer of 2005...left Europe to dig up funk records even more obscure and elusive than US Funk 45s: I moved to Guinea on the coast of West Africa where I retired as a DJ and dedicated my entire time to the pursuit of African Funk Records. This blog is about my travels and experiences in a region that despite being plagued by civil wars corrupt governments and other diseases has so much more to offer. Maybe this site will inspire some of You to just go and buy a plane ticket and come to see where we all came from. You might find things more valuable than the rarest records and sometimes you won't even have to dig through dusty boxes to find them."
No downloads of tunes but great mixes of pretty f**king rare shit from West Africa along with great stories of literally going to ends of the earth to find tunes.

DiscoShawn and his tales from Buenos Aires, Argentina delighted many a dull day in my work. He is back in his hometown now but hopefully we will continue to hear about what he's up to.
For a snapshot of Disco Shawn's Buenos Aires go here.

    Best comments on a post:
Has to go to Nialler9 with the public spat that he had with Tim (the smarmite) over some very poor handling of a Nokia sponsored night in Dublin. What follows in the comment section, after Naill called them out, was even worse handling of the negative PR. Ooops. Nice one Nialler. Check it here.

Best discussion on how music blogs are bad for the music industry/ artists:
Only here 'cos I managed to get myself involved in a 'me against them' kinda discussion with some nu-jazz/broken beats fans (whose taste I respect very much) about whether music/mp3 blogs were bad, etc.
It was a great discussion that unfortunately ended quite abruptly (I think with my comment at the end of a lengthy post " Now I have to go to my class..... 'Legal Aspects of the Music Business").

As a result of this discussion I revised my posting policy which has resulted in  benefits for CubikMusik, its readers and myself and I reach out to artists and labels to build relationships with them. See the discussion here.

Last but no least here is my favourite/best song of 2007. I got this from headphonesex back in July and in all honesty it is still on constant rotation in my ears.
This is the Optimo Espacio dub remix of Pharoahe Monch's Body Baby where they take many of the great sounds of 2007 and propel them forward by about 5 years. Just a rockin' tune.
    Download 03_body_baby_an_optimo_espacio_dub.mp3

Update (5) December 17th: XLR8R has some great best ofs starting with best albums of 2007 here.

    Update (6) December 18th: Audiveristy's top 12 Albums of 2007

Update (7) December 27th:  Boomkat has a phenomenal run down of various 2007 charts from the likes of Dave Howell (Fat Cat), Mark Pritchard (Harmonic 33) and many more.

feedback, comments, suggestions,  other best of's welcome.

    Go to Innersounds....Now!

I don't know how Jez over at Innersounds got this tune by Coyote that is going to be released on Is It Balearic? Records.

It is an achingly beautiful tune and I just told Jez that I don't know whether to smile or cry when listening to it.

You can't download it so get over the disappointment, turn up your volume sit back, hit play and close your eyes.

Stop checking out what's happening on CubikMusilk.
Don't worry about sending that email.
    The news can wait.
    GO!

Latest BlogFreshRadio show is up for this week and I am on there talking about Soda.

This week's show is really good (as ever) where I share my time with PunkPhoto, Pop Tarts Suck Toasted, Oceans Never Listen, Cable & Tweed and Quick Before It Melts.

My personal favourite from this weeks show is Iron & Wine + Calexico - "Dark Eyes" from the I'm Not There Soundtrack. Very nice stuff.

Thanks to the BlogFreshRadio team for putting togehther this excellent weekly show. Essential listening indeed.

    Cheers

      • Although this is a method of sharing files it is not my intention to disrupt the flow of commerce between consumers and musicians. This blog is a way for me to share some of the great music that I come across (legally 99% of the time) so that others can get a sample in order to support the artists by purchasing music or going to a show. If some of the music posted here is yours please email me at cubikmusik@gmail.com with a request to remove and I will gladly do so. Thanks and I hope you enjoy cubikmusik. cheers cubik
