what a weekend lies ahead.

tomorrow night is benji b in dublin for a free show at solas. needles to say i am freakin' excited. took friday off work after i heard he was playing. nuff said.

friday night: dinner with friends and rest.

heading to cheebah in limerick on saturday for the 'credit crunch (on expenses) tour with adam whitaker (unusual&electric), paul tarpey and 'special mystery guest'. i've been following and supporting adam since i first posted about unusual & electric back in 2007. since then we've known each other virtually and pretty frequently i get packages in the mail with mix cds, new eps, calenders, postcards, etc. (as adam is also a designer). a true gent: passionate about his music yet equally passionate about living.
this will be the first time i get to meet him and to njoy seeing him playing not one, but two sets.
also looking forward to meeting the cheebah crew and to be at the club which is meant to be such great fun.
gonna b a good one.

sunday is back to ukiyo for two events.
first is a tasting session, and book reading from the "Evolution of the Ciaran Crawford Action Figure Doll" by Dylan Stott and Ciaran Crawford. Ciaran, the chef, masterminds the various recipies, and Dylan provides the stories.
Confused Eclectic has a great review of the last session of this series which is an event in itself.
lets just say that last time round there was Sake Mojitos, Mille Feuilles with Black & White Pudding, Apple Crisps and Cider Jus.Warm Champagne Jelly with Candied Chili and more and more.

following this is the afterparty to celebrate ukiyo's 5th birthday with billy scurry and guests.
i have the week off next week so yes, i'll be out and about on sunday night until the wee hours.

original cultures

bumped into laurent fintoni on twitter a while back and a delight to follow with all kinds of good stuff coming from him.  one of the main things he's been planning and just launched today is original cultures which runs in balogna today through saturday. its a fascinating project and one that i hope to see being brought to dublin at some point soon enough. there is scope and need for something like this here. lets see what happens with this cultural exchange through the medium of modern performing arts in new and unique ways.

Original Cultures

"There is an amazing wealth of talent, cultural diversity and traditions in modern performing arts in both Japan and Europe. However, for years language, distance and communication have made it difficult for artists in Europe and Japan to collaborate and for the intricacy and richness of the cultures to be properly exposed to the public outside of the respective countries. While the internet has helped to reduce the issue of distance, as well as language and communication to a lesser extent, there still lacks a real program of cultural exchange between Japan and European countries at the level of modern performing arts.
Original Cultures aims to create such a program through the development and implementation of activities
that form the basis of a regular Cultural Exchange Program (CEP) between the countries. All Original Cultures CEP activities will be documented and archived on the internet in multimedia formats to create an interactive and unique record of the ongoing cultural exchange."

shake it up

had the great pleasure of hanging out with ghislain poirier in dublin last night before his show in dublin's transmission club night at the button factory. this was my first night there and while i reckon the button factory is a great venue now (as oppossed to when it was the temple bar music centre) i didn't know what to expect from the night itself with regard to the crowd, etc.
i arrived between the dvd recording of some indie band's show and the transmission night. as the crowds changed from people in tight hipspter jeans to looser clothes and more of a party feel i felt that the warm-up dj's were really good with lots of great party style techno but a sound that was perhaps not right for ghislain's deep bass and inclinations to dancehall. needless to say we were all (including ghislain) wondering as to how he could approach this.
as the last techno tune faded out to a massive 'rewind' the layers of bass started to flow into a rolling bassline that didn't stop for the night. with a change from straight four to the floor dance moves to swaying and bouncing to the massive thumps some of the crowd got turned away but i'd say 80% stayed and they were true movers and shakers. what a fun night! this goes out to my mate mitul who had his eyes opened to this sound and to a japanese dude who was there totally loving it.

back in april 07 I wrote the post below about dj sandrinho who is now playing next weekend (for free) as part of deaf. he is playing at the South William which is quite trendy in general but has top music and on a friday night for this kinda show will be full of up for it party people ready for some baile funk action in a dark, low ceiling dancefloor. see you there!

Music is just great. I think we can all agree on that. It invokes all kinds of emotions and memories at the first sound of a piano being played, trumpet blowing, guitar strumming or a voice that sings words that mean the world to you. Music can be used to deliver a message that can make you think, challenge you to act or to show love for someone.

Then there is music that is just made to make you move your body!
This is one such tune.
Now I don't know DJ Sandrinho and I certianly can't speak to the message that he wanted to convey when creating this track but I really do believe that all he foresaw was a room full of bodies dancing along without abandon. Mission accomplished I say! I've listened to this track at least 20 times since buying it last night and each time I am so tempted to hop on a plane and head off to Brazil to party. :-)
Baile Funk at its finest here  with such playful percussion and some of the dirtiest bass that I've ever come across. Released on Man Recordings ,this track, Montagem Percua, is taken from Baile Funk Masters #1.
With "Baile Funk Masters" Man Recordings starts a second series which deals with the mad beats from Rios favelas. "Baile Funk Masters" exclusively presents the real deal: Raw, uncut baile funk, straight outta studios of Rio De Janeiross currently hottest producers.

a day in the life

 

Update (Sept. 8th): Venue has changed due to flooding at Luggala. Moved to Royal Hospital in Kilmainham.

Next weekend sees another top night of fine tunes. 'A Day In The Life Festival' takes place in the beautiful setting of Luggala featuring Kraftwerk, DJ Mehdi, Busy P, D1 DJs, Soulwax, The Jimmy Cake, Comtron, Boxcutter and Dark Room Notes.
As the originators of dance/electronic music Kraftwerk are sure to wow the limited audience of 4,999 people. I had the absolute delight to see them play when I was 17 in the Humingbird, Birmingham with my brother. It is easily one of the best shows I've been to. Will be interesting to see if this tops it.

zizek in europe

My mate, El Remolon, dropped me a note today to tell me the great news that Zizek from Buenos Aires will be taking on a European tour in November this year! Great stuff indeed.
El Remolon has been featured on Cubikmusik here and here and the tune, Cumbia Bichera, is still one of my all time favourite electronic tunes.
Hopefully we can get them to play a show in Dublin so that people here can experience what Diplo describes as a 'movement'.

thedeathset hit dublin

Was excited to see a poster for the upcoming Dublin show by TheDeathSet. Generally not my cup of tea with regard to listening to the music at home on a Sunday afternoon but their live show is an experience that should not be missed! Got to see them a few times during SXSW when they played at our own showcase. Kept on bumping into the guys all week also and had a great laugh. So, see you at Crawdaddy on Friday for some full on fun.

And on another note, via Covert Curiosity and Pitchfork, comes news of a 'round robin' tour curated by Dan Deacon with 29 (yes, 29) of Baltimore's finest acts in place (including TheDeathSet). What a show this would be with the "round robin" concept: at each gig, all of the night's bands will set up their gear simultaneously "along the perimeter of the room, with the audience in the center." Then the round robin part begins, as each band rolls through one song, then passes the spotlight to the next band with nary a moment's break in between.

Two lineup updates in one day for Electric Picnic. With only 7 weeks to go the anticipation is building..

cheebah (and all that)

big shout out to my mate Adam from Unusual & Electric and the Cheebah crew in Limerick, Ireland. They have a top weekend planned for June 27th and I am hoping to try and make it down there.

Adam spins some choice tunes (he turned me onto Blundetto's 'bossy' tune amongst manner others) and he covers a wide spectrum of sounds with reggae, hip-hop, house, bass and all round good times music.
I know that the Cheebah crew gets a top crowd that will definitely be down for those sounds so it'll be a great night. Drop by if you're in the area. Hopefully see ya'll there.

bodytonic @ electric picnic

this is where i'll be spending a lot of my time at this year's Electric Picnic.

The Bodytonic Village has an assortment of fine tuneage from around the world with the highlights for me being Diplo (saw him around 3 times at SXSW and had a blast every time), Kerri Chandler (have never managed to see this legend so this is a treat), The Count and Sinden, Modeselector, Roni Size/ Reprazent (hopefully covering some 'New Form's material), DJ Spinna, Stee Downes (label manager for Bodytonic label,Scribble, see below), Stereotonic DJs, Bodytonic Soundsystem, Christian Pommer/Drum Lesson and pretty much 90% of the lineup.

After being in Texas for 4 years or so I've been starved of a good dose of dance music so this should hit the spot. Nice one to the Bodytonic crew for putting this together. Top fun.

  France, Thursday July 3rd to Monday July 7th 2008. The festival, curated by
  Gilles Peterson, offers great music in a beautiful outdoor setting and is
  our favourite festival of the year, the line up this year includes:

Madlib, The Cinematic Orchestra, Benga, Laurent Garnier, Henrik Schwarz, Little Dragon, Zero DB, Toshio Matsuura.....

Get involved in the Brownswood  trip from London to the festival.

The line-up is below and is spread
  over 3 days in 3 venues, and we have found 2 accommodation options (please
  note that there is no on-site accommodation, so the choices are in public
  hotels and campsites).

OPTION 1 - £500
  This includes standard class return train travel from London St. Pancras to
  Paris (eurostar) and onwards from Paris to Sete, a VIP ticket to all 3
  nights of the festival, at least one meal with the organisers and some of
  the artists, and a 3* hotel room for 4 nights close to the venues. The hotel
  room is either a double or a twin room shared with one other person or a
  single person supplement is available if preferred.

OPTION 2 - £350
  All of the above, but substituting the hotel room with self-catering camping
  at a local 4* campsite next to the beach. You would need to bring your own
  tent and the campsite is approx 5 miles (8 Kms) from the venues.
  (Please note that the campsite also has 2 bedroom chalets which would be a
  good option for 3 or more sharing).

There are various optional activities being organised which you are welcome
  to join in (or not as you please).

The plan is as follows:

DAY 1 (Thursday July 3rd)

Eurostar from London to Paris first thing in the
  morning. Lunch in Paris followed by TGV train from Paris to Sete. Upon

  festival begins that evening.

The lineup for Electric Picnic 2008 was announced today. Some pretty good stuff here with more to be added  over the coming weeks I guess. With a circus onsite, comedy stage, top class food and so much more this is a top weekend away and I will be there for the first time so any tips you can offer would be superb.
