March 16, 2008

thats all folks. party's over. going home.

voice: almost gone
legs: aching
ears: ringing
house: a mess
reality: bites
vodka: not my friend anymore
fun times at sxsw: priceless

Yesterday was such a great laugh. Started it off with some food and a beer with Michael from Sonic Itch and then headed off downtown. Another hot day with the sun shining and the realization that the party was gonna be over soon so everybody was on form. I spent my entire day at the Fader Fort* so it was great to not to have to go from venue to venue. Of course free booze helps to keep you there but they had such a great lineup there was no need for anything else. In between bands there were some fun tune from the Fools Gold crew (as far as I know) so that kept the energy going.

Banner_2

David 'Fucking' Banner pretty much blew SXSW up yesterday afternoon with the whole crowd soaking it up. Originally scheduled to play at the Fader Fort earlier in the day many people thought they had missed him. In all honesty I had never heard any music by David Banner before yesterday. That is one if the reasons I love SXSW so much; being introduced to music in a live setting is much better than listening at home, etc
He is a massive figure who's personality fills the stage and beyond with boundless energy. Jumping into the crowd during the first song, spraying beers all over the place and on his way back to the stage creating a mosh pit where 15 or so people proceeded to tear it up like it was a full on metal show. Banner is obviously a very smart guy with intelligent speeches throughout the set that were well received by all.

Lykke

Earlier in the day I got to see Lykke Li who was brilliant. Wonderful pop kinda sounds that remind me somewhat of Roisin Murphy. Again, an artist that was new to me and on a Saturday afternoon in the sun it was perfect. Such an adorable show that had the whole crowd smiling away with all the guys ending up with crushes. I'm off to buy the album.
Here's 'Little Bit' for your listening pleasure. Download lykke_li_little_bit.mp3. (buy the album or single)

Saw Diplo running around for most of the afternoon and then he came on stage on got situated behind the decks. Santagold came on stage with two girls in grey uniform type outfits and the stood at each side of the stage and did some great moves along throughout the set. Santagold is a top performer who obviously loves it. She was laughing away between songs the whole time and delivered a set that blew the crowd up. Diplo was pretty funny as he got trigger happy with the air horns as he grinned away to himself. Amanda Blank came on stage for a moment. I still love her.

Santagold_2

By this time it was around 6pm and the place was packed with pretty much everyone being there for the previous two hours so there was a superb atmosphere and everybody out for a serious party.

Spankrock up next and oh man. They had the whole place bouncing like nothing else. We all just went crazy, bouncing to the deep ass bass and had a great time. What a show they came out with and again, Amanda Blank onstage (that girl is everywhere) doing a tune. and at the end of the set they called out for people to come onstage. Needless to say the crowd obliged.

Spankrock

2 Live Crew arrived to a rapturous applause and much screaming. First things first: get the ladies on the stage for a little booty shakin' to get warmed up. You know, its cool seeing old school like that but is also sad when you have middle aged guys signing about wanting pussy. Maybe its just me.

After Fader Fort, at around 9pm it was either the Fools Gold showcase or the do512 party and I went for the latter. Managed to get there in time for some great tunes from some DJs (sorry, didn't catch their names) and then it was 'Man Man' who definitely have listened to a little Tom Waits in their day. They put on a great show and with a backdrop of some cool looking versa tubes they captivated the audience for a nice hour long set. After that I hung out with the do512 crew for their afterparty which was great fun. Almost went with them to some party afterparty downtown with the Cool Kids but I called it day and made my merry way home.

See ya'll next year I hope.

last day of sxsw

It seems like each year SXSW takes for ever to come around. Then the day before it kicks off you cannot believe that it has arrived. Day one you get off to a running start like the kid in the proverbial candy store; wanting to soak it all up. You almost can't take it. It all seems to run past in a blur with music, people, booze, food, music, music, people booze, music whirring by. You always meet great people from all around some who you've known virtually for some time and others you just bump into as you wait in yet another line.
Today is the last day of SXSW for me. There are some shows tomorrow but to be honest I think its gonna take a day of mostly silence sitting at home to get my ears to stop ringing before reality bites with work on Monday!
Yesterday was a super day. I got started at around pm and managed to see Delorentos from Dublin playing for about 30 mins. I really enjoyed the set and I was happy to see that there were some industry people there. Also bumped into Jim Carroll and we exchanged some tips and stories (nice to meet you again Jim). Off to the Fadar Fort to meet with Covert and to grab a beer. I missed The Knux who apparently had a great set. Got to see The Fashion who I enjoyed reasonably well as a way to get my day going. I am back to Fader Fort today for the following: Santagold, Spankrock and 2LiveCrew! Bring it!

From there I went off to get my wristband for the iheartcomix vs mad decent party. Picture this: a 20 thousnd square foot parking garage that is rented out just for this party. The rooftops have sound stages set up around the place, a swimming pool, shuffle board and a free scotch bar with some of the friendliest bar staff I have met at a free bar in 90 degree weather. Oh yeh, yesterday was hot!

Hanging out in the sun, drinking free scotch at 3 in the afternoon and listening to El Remolon from Argentina play his beautifully hypnotizing sounds is a wonderful experience. After writing about him almost a year ago it is amazing to get to experience him live and he has a great set. The Zizek North American tour is going well according to Grant and they have two more dates in NY on March 17th and Chicago on March 21st. Check out info. here. There is also a compilation of tunes released by Zizek Records that I will write about seperately.

Back to SXSW. Myself and Covert hung out at the garage for about an hour or so but you can imagine the struggle we went through in leaving a free scotch bar. Needless to say that struggle took three scotches to work through.:)

We split up from their and I went to see Darondo play a few songs and it was amazing to see. His voice captures you from the moment you hear it. Much thanks to Ice Cream Man for the cold treats to take the edge off the afternoon sun.

Met with up with Dev from Blog Fresh Radio for the Mercury Records showcase and got to see one of the great surprises of this years SXSW (for me). Duffy apparently is pretty successful in the UK with a number one album and single over there. I had heard absolutely nothing about this at all before I walked in and listened to David Massey make the introductions. When I bumped into him later at the venue he described Duffy as a "legend in the making". And you know what, while the music industry thrives on hype I think that he may be onto something. I was completely enamored by Duffy who, along with her superb backing band, came on an wowed the audience with 5-6 songs. While the show was very much a performance, ,contrived perhaps(?), Duffy's voice reminded me of Alice Russell but is warmer and richer in some way. Perhaps its the Welsh in her. Either way it was great stuff.

Duffy

There comes a time during all this running about that you have to make the call to eat or else you leave it too late and end up skipping a meal and for this endurance test that is SXSW you can't really afford to skip a meal. So, we ran off the Ruby's BBQ for a feed. I highly recommend it. As one of the people at dinner has two kids we ran across to Toy Joy. Little did I know that the kids were in fact with me and the guys spent quite a while digging through the mass of stuff that is in that store. Success came in the form of cowboy hats and some other fun stuff.
Taxi'd back to town for a party on the east side that turned out to be a non-party. I managed to get their early and had expected to see South Rakkas Crew. There was nothing being set-up, the organizer (who will remain nameless for now) wasn't around and no-one at the venue seemed to know what was happening. Weird. At this stage it was me and Covert again and we wanted beats!
Back to the iheartcomix vs mad decent party which we got into just in time to grab some beers and to catch Blaqstarr laying down some serious Baltimore beats. The place was hopping and he kept on cranking it up.

Blaqstarr

Heartschallenger

I spent a little time speaking with Chai from Hearts Challenger who I had seen on CurrentTV a while back. Very nice bloke and these guys are bringing their unique experience around the world one party at a time. Would love to see them bringing the love to Electric Picnic later this year and they would love to be a part of it. Anyone got an 'in' for them?

Simian Mobile Disco kicked off on the opposite end of the garage so as Blaqstarr cranked up serious bass SMD was getting into some serious acid fueled, four to the floor  beats that got the crowd going just a little crazy. After 4 years in Austin I was thoroughly delighted to experience something close to the fun we had back when we were largin' it. A great set from them and I was chuffed to have gotten to check them out after a few failed attempts.
Smd

Amanda Blank is a force to be reckoned with. Amazing stage presence and she sure can spit out some rhymes over seriously funky beats and bass. I think I'm in love. Check her out.

I gotta admit that I dropped out of the party before Diplo/Switch/Drop The Lime hit the stage. Kinda regret that now but had heard that the party was shut down the night before and wasn't up to leaving the garage down one flight of stairs with 1500 other people while the cops watched from the side. Getting too old for that shit.

Today starts off with Cathy Davey at 12.30pm and then off to Stubbs to check out Digitalism and Chromeo.  As mentioned above I am back to the Fort at 6pm through 8.30pm or so and then I get to wander to the Fool Gold showcase night which I reckon is gonna be a fun one.

my sxsw schedule

It is next to impossible to try and plan the 4 days of music with over 1500 bands playing in I don't know how many venues. I've tried to build my schedule over and over as each time it is almost complete another party is announced that draws your attention. I started this post last week and it is now Tuesday and everything kicks off tomorrow. This is as far as I've gotten and am giving up.

To see pretty much everything that I'll be trying to check out go here. Much thanks to Chirag and Taylor for getting sched.org together to help manage the madness! Great stuff.

These are some shows that I want to definitely get to. Party/Event nane and venue is in bold. There are other bands playing at the shows but I am just going over my picks. I realize that I am potentially missing out on some great stuff by doing this but have faith that I will find my way to a lot of hidden gems as it were throughout the four days.

You will see duplicates here-basically if I miss or can't get into one show I'll try the next day. :)

the big one

Over the past year or so the guys and gals over at do512 have become semi-regulars on my weekend ventures out to have beers. Between dropping by the office for impromptu drinks or heading to a party/get together they always know how to show you a good time and are nothing but fun to be around. It sounds like a cliche ('cos it is) but they work and play hard. Its a good thing we have them on our side as sponsors of the 'Above The Radar' party. But, that's not what I am here to talk about.
The do512 crew (and some friends) will be throwing a huge party on Saturday at the do512 compound with lights/visuals in the form of VersaTubes by Rozone Productions and with a kickin' sound system.
Bring it!

sound advice

Austinsound2_logo_7

My mate Doug (and his posse) over at AustinSound is a tireless champion of music that comes out of, and into Austin. AustinSound is a treasure trove of into like album reviews, label profiles and much more including their second compilation of Austin Sounds to accompany you as you plan to take in some of the local acts during SXSW. Nice one!

"The past year has been an impressive one for Austin music. Both Okkervil River and Spoon cemented their place among the cream of the indie crop with excellent releases, Bill Callahan emerged impressively from his smoggy haze, and Octopus Project brought an avalanche of national attention. Ghostland Observatory rode a wave lasers across nearly every major festival to carry them beyond their allotted 15 minutes and Billy Joe Shaver shot some guy in the face outside a bar the week of a Greatest Hits release – that’s how to drum up press, Texas style. So in anticipation of the beloved onslaught of SXSW and to welcome everyone back to Austin, we present our second digital compilation, Sound Advice Vol. II: The Latest Toughs.

Like last year’s offering, we’ve lined up tracks from 21 local artists that we think highlight some of the best Austin has to offer. So what constitutes the Austin Sound these days? As expected, it’s an eclectic sweep, but there are some distinct trends that seem to be emerging. Retro rules, from Sixties-inspired garage rock and pop (The Black, The Strange Boys), to soul (Black Joe Lewis), to Austin’s psychedelic roots (Horse + Donkey). Like most indie bands these days, reputations are being built behind the pure explosive energy of incomparable live shows from the likes of White Denim and Mothfight!, contrasted by the resurgence of melodic shoegaze among artists like the Soldier Thread and Silver Pines. An excellent crop of new young songwriters also continues to bloom, like Graham Weber, Martin Crane’s Brazos, and Jeremy Ballard’s Dark Water Hymnal. All of the tracks have been contributed by the artists, and are available for individual download as well as a complete 1 hour and 17 minute mix below."

I particularly like Belaire's 'You Really Got Me Goin" and am delighted to see Transmography and Monahans featured as they are playing at our party at Trophy's on Thursday.

To download the entire compilation, or individual tracks and to get the artists SXSW show times head on over to AustinSound.

rich girls

Virgins

One week to go until our 'Above the Radar' party here in Austin. I know, I know, I've been talking about it almost non-stop in my posts but we are so excited to be having this show. Austin is just abuzz with energy right now and every time I talk to someone who is a music head we discover more new parties to go to which means you gotta go back to your schedule and see how you can fit that in! We'll need a vacation after it all!

Anyways-only a few more show related posts left I reckon.
1/2 Alive hail from Vancouver in Canada and run a club night there that all things considered is just brilliant!
Check out photos here and feel the fun!
These guys will be playing on the outside stage between 4.30pm-5pm and will be followed by Ghislain Poirier (more to follow on him).
Definitely come and check them out if you're in town.

Today's tune is by The Virgins (also playing during SXSW-Friday 8pm, Cedar Door) and its called 'Rich Girls' and I am posting today 'cos if you head on over to Blog Fresh Daily* you can hear the 1/2 Alive edit of this pretty cool little song.

'Above The Radar' Party Update-One Week to Go!

My mate Mr. Curiosity talks with Blog Fresh Radio  about Transmography over on who will be playing at our 'Above The Radar' party next week.

Also, we're delighted that the blog Pandatoes will be spinning some tunes at the party in between bands on the outside stage. Rumor has it that another blog, Not On the Guest List may be joining in also.
And if that's not enough both Mr.Curiosity and myself will also be playing some tunes outside throughout the day.
Needless to  say we are super f**king excited about the whole deal and hope that if you're in town you drop by to check it out, say hi, drink a beer (or soda) and of course hear some fine music.

This weekend I'll be posting an extensive post on what shows I'll be seeing (or trying to see) throughout the 4 days of music along with tunes where possible, show times, etc.

Cheers

Dead Confederate @ Above The Radar

Dead_confederateOh yes....the countdown to SXSW is moving along very nicely. I gotta say there is a buzz in the air here in Austin as more and more shows are announced and everyone starts to try and figure out who they can get to see and make arrangements to catch up with everyone coming through town. I know that I am trying to meet with quite a few people from around the world that I've been in touch with over the years through CubikMusik. We'll be exchanging stories, listening to some lots of tunes and drinking some beers no doubt. Check back here in about a week or so and I'll be posting all the day and night shows that I'll be either checking out or recommending. Where possible I'll include tunes, and showtimes, etc.

Speaking of shows....you can find the weekly Above The Radar party installment over at Blog Fresh Radio this week. My mate Michael over at Sonic Itch Music covers a band that he has a lot of time for. The band are Dead Confederate and they hail from Athens, GA. They'll be headlining the inside stage during 'Above The Radar' and will be on at around 6pm. Oh yeh-and these guys are supporting REM the night before at Stubbs!

I sincerely hope that if you read this blog, or any of the others involved, that you drop by to check out the great music and say hi. Its really great to meet people who know so much about us even if its via our musical tastes. If you can't make it but are in town for SXSW and wanna meetup over some tunes just drop me a line: cubikmusik@gmail.com

Ubiquity at SXSW

Cannot wait for this show!

Darondo

From SXSW Music News:

SXSW is proud to announce yet another groundbreaking label showcase for SXSW ’08!

San Francisco based Ubiquity Recordings will present a night of soul, funk, hip-hop and jazz, anchored by the Texas debut of the mysterious soul singer - Darondo!

In the early 1970’s, Darondo seemed to have the world at his diamond ring covered fingertips. He released three singles to much critical acclaim, 7” 45’s in fact, and then virtually disappeared. His records were highly sought after for years by collectors and when Ubiquity found the man behind the many myths, they inked a deal and reissued the singles with a few unreleased tracks Darondo found in his archives. He did his first show in 25 years in mid-December in San Francisco and we are ecstatic to announce that he will be in Austin with us this coming March.

The bill is rounded out by some incredible soul, jazz and funk that the label has become known for. Connie Price and the Keystones, Orgonne, The Lions and rapper Ohmega Watts are all on deck for this priceless showcase.

Check out a Darando tune that I posted back in Feb. '06 and one from Ohmega Watts that was about the 10th tune that I posted on CubikMusik back in August '05. How time flies yet the tunes are still great.

Lovin' it.

If some of the music posted here is yours please email me at cubikmusik@gmail.com with a request to remove and I will gladly do so. Thanks and I hope you enjoy cubikmusik. cheers cubik
