After much patient waiting I got my copy of Brownswood Bubblers from Gilles Peterson's new label, Brownswood Recordings, about a week ago and it has been in my ears constantly.
I was surprised at first as the whole compilation is very much low-key and on a slower pace than I was expecting. It was a grower for me but worth it. ;-)
One disappointment was that I was expecting some liner notes from Gilles talking about the comp. and the label. Oh well.
The tunes that I am posting here are those that jumped out at me.
Artist: Shawn J. Period
Tune: Places Everyone
Breakbeats and a double bass that could knock you over.
I am reading Shawn's intro. over on His-Space and he has taken a very strong stance on the use of sampling on his records so I am assuimg that this tune is probably sample free. Impressive.
Whats also impressive is the list of artists that he has worked with including Mos Def, DJ Krush and some of the heads on Rawkus. Check out discography.

Artist: Choklate
Tune: Choklate
Oh man, Choklate's voice just melts me away. So amazing.
This tune is beautifully produced with such passion oozing out in every sound. Simple, understated beats accompanied by some beatiful guitar playing and a hint of piano. Based in Seattle (after moving from San Diego) and working with Bean One, Vitamin D and Jake One, Choklate is delivering fresh sounds from Washington State on her new album.
