nice one to SpineTV for putting this together. An interesting insight into Eglo records out of London with Alex Nut, Funkineven (with the tune 'Mad Swing' that is massive) and Fatima (of the beautiful Lil' Girl tune from Shafiq Husayn). Only missing Mr. Floating Points this time round. Its always great to hear some of the stories behind a label that you admire for its consistent output and dedication to quality music. It goes against the grain of all the horror stories about the music industry, etc. so refreshing to see and inspiring to watch. Got the link to this via Soul-Identity.
Here's a Floating Points remix of Fela Kuti's No Enemy and also, check below for a clip from an upcoming release from Floating Points. As ever, big!
Bill Withers is a true legend of not just music but of the wonder of the human spirit.
This documentary, made by
Alex Vlack and Damani
Baker and acquired by the now defunct B-Side entertainment group, gives us a glimpse into the world of an artist that has influenced so many others while being an integral element in our musical journey and education.
See if there any screenings in your area or maybe organise your own? If you're in Dublin and would be interested in attending a screening leave a comment, drop me an email ([email protected]) or hit me up on twitter as myself and Confused Eclectic are looking into setting up a screening here. thanks to julien at laid back for turning me onto this one.
secondhand sureshots is a documentary made by dublab and on sale via stones throw.
"filmed experiment in creative sound recycling. Dublab Dublab directors Bryan “Morpho” Younce & Mark "frosty" McNeill sent beatmakers Daedelus, Nobody, J.Rocc and Ras G on safari into L.A. thrift stores with orders to make new music out of five finds while the cameras filmed the whole process. The result is a mini-documentary about putting new life into old vinyl. Over 2 hours of footage, music & bonus material."
never ceases to amaze me how peeps like this can listen to one thing and pull it apart to use parts to create something entirely new. props!
upcoming documentary that looks at just some of britain's beat making scientists. looks interesting as there is so much great beats coming outta there.
much shout outs to the crew over @ laid back radio who not only have a top online radio schedule with quality sounds and personalities to boot but have now released their first (of many?) documentaries. a 15 minute journey into the life and mind of JR a digger who just may inspire you to follow your dreams. in saying that I also have to give kudos to the laid back radio crew also for inspiring as they continue to pursue their dreams and to do it well. i certainly get inspired and motivated by them.
favela on blast, gets screened in austin during sxsw. looks great and a pretty unique insight into the worlds that are inhabited musically and physically by those involved.hope i get to see it here sometime.
4pm Saturday March 14th at The Hideout and 10pm Thursday March 19th at Paramount (with Diplo Q&A after screening)!
Much thanks to Doug from AustinSound who took me to the Sonic Youth/ Meat Puppets show in Stubbs last night. What a top show. I had never heard of Meat Puppet and was highly impressed with their show. They seriously rocked the place out and they have one of the most animated bass players I've ever seen.
Then came Sonic Youth. Wow! Still laying it down like it was all new. I can't believe these guys are rockin' it still with such energy and passion. I have got to say this also (and I think I may have declared this before), there is nothing in this world as sexy as a woman playing bass! Kim Gordon, Kim Deal and the bass player with the Strange Attractors here in Austin are my top three.
Check out the free stuff also- DIY T-Shirts, Buy Goo or other albums.
And while we are on about Sonic Youth. My mate Dave Donohue (who used to write for CubikMusik back when we were an email newsletter) has been involved with Sonic Youth in various ways over the years but his main association is with the amazing documentary, Put Blood in The Music, from the late 80's talking to various artists about the New York music scene. Dave is a great guy who is super talented with his music, his writing, documentary work and involvement in film. Thanks for sharing all this Dave.
"I don't know anything about that jigga jigga stuff-you play that and I'll play this..."
-Paul Humphrey, 2000
if there is anything that I love more than music it is the influence of old sounds on new. The documentary film, Keepintime, delivers on both counts. I am gonna use the info. directly from the makers to discuss this documentary. See a trailer below.
Keepintime started as a simple idea, let’s bring some of the most revered and notable L.A. session drummers together for a photo shoot. Then have them talk about the famous (to us) recordings that we (those whose ears
have been opened through hip-hop) treasure, sample and
discuss endlessly. The musicians (Roy Porter, Earl Palmer, Paul Humphrey
and James Gadson) were excited at the prospect of sitting
together and discussing old times, old friends and the
business. The first problem we encountered though was that to our ears the famous sessions were in fact often beyond the reach of our musician’s memory. Babu, J.Rocc and Cut Chemist (along with Numark, Madlib, Derf Reklaw and Shortkut) are fishermen of the elusive.
Cumulatively, they have a half-century of beat shopping experience. Similarly, they are the best turntablists
in the City of Angels. As a result they would be the best way to snatch up those almost lost glimpses of music and represent them to their creators, that was the moment when we knew we had a film. The puzzled smiles of Paul Humphrey and Earl Palmer
speak multitudes on the perceived gap that exists between the musicians of today and their forefathers. However, lest we forget these men were progressive risk takers in their respective professions and a few turntables weren’t going to get in the way of a good conversation.
All I can add is that it is a must see for music lovers and especially
any beat junkies out there like myself; the interaction between these
beat masters is just unbelievable and such a pleasure to see as much
as hear.
Brought to you by Mochilla and B+ (a fellow Irishman).
The project also brought us some fine remix tunes-here are my favourites. Artist: Charlie Dark Tune: Keepintime Theme Download 01_keepintime_theme.mp3
You can't to be able to buy the DVD anywhere but the CD is available.
Also see Brasilintime a similar project between some artists and turntabilists from the Keepintime show and Brasil. I love my DJ Nuts tshirt from this show.
I saw this on a sign in the Paradise Bar in Kingston Jamaica while watching The Studio One story (thanks Neil).
"Small minds discuss people
Medium minds discuss events
Great minds discuss ideas"
For anyone interested in reggae music, its history and influences you should check out this DVD, it is a great watch. Amazing so see the interviews with so many Studio One legends.
"BEFORE THE MUSIC DIES tells the story of American music at this
precarious moment. Filmmakers Andrew Shapter and Joel Rasmussen
traveled the country, hoping to understand why mainstream music seems
so packaged and repetitive, and whether corporations really had the
power to silence musical innovation. The answers they found on this
journey–ultimately, the promise that the future holds–are what makes
BEFORE THE MUSIC DIES both riveting and exhilarating. At the heart of BEFORE THE MUSIC DIES are interviews with musicians,
industry insiders, music critics, and fans that reveal how music has
reached this moment of truth. Featured performances from a truly
diverse group of artists, ranging from The Dave Matthews Band and
Erykah Badu to Seattle street performers and Mississippi gospel singers
show us that great music is always out there—as long as you know where
to look. BEFORE THE MUSIC DIES will renew your passion for great music,
and inspire you to play an active part in its future."
As must see for any music fan. Cheers, Cubik

Although this is a method of sharing files it is not my intention to disrupt the flow of commerce between consumers and musicians.
This blog is a way for me to share some of the great music that I come across (legally 99% of the time) so that others can get a sample in order to support the artists by purchasing music or going to a show.
If some of the music posted here is yours please email me at [email protected] with a request to remove and I will gladly do so.
Thanks and I hope you enjoy cubikmusik.
cheers
