yes yes ya'll. we're back with 'under the influence' and this time round we have the mpc master fulgeance talking about some of his musical influences. if you haven't heard any of the tunes that have been produced you need to check them out. fulgeance is from the excellent one handed music label run by the gent alex chase that also gives a place called home to bullion, paul white, guy-roy and tranqill. deffo a label to watch with great beats, treats and musical feeling oozing from their pores.
check out fugelance's sounds over at bandcamp so please listen and purchase away in support. also try and check out the live show "He plays live via two MPC’s and is completely mind blowing to watch.
His fast paced and energetic performance approach is a refreshing
outlook from the 'head in your laptop' era. Fun and highly talented,
this is a welcome return." I especially recommend 'sour socca', got it well on rotation these days.
much thanks to fulgeance for taking the time out to share his influences with us and for creating a mix of al the sounds. a great read and listen.
also check out the bodytonic interview.

DABRYE - HYPED-UP PLUS TAX (Ghostly)
Each time somebody asks me what is my favorite track, I give this
one. So futuristic music, even today, minimal and groovy with maybe 3
elements/instruments...When I heard first time that track, I could imagine people dancing on
a futuristic dancefloor, and not just banging crazy but dancin "groovy" way, and I'm happy that today,
because of Dabrye and many more, we could have that kind of music in good clubs...best track
ever, for me.
THOMAS BANGALTER - CLUB SODA (Roulé)
I chose this one, because I'm a house music lover, since "good" french
touch", and this
track from Bangalter influenced me a lot about all my LOW CLUB stuff, a
kind of slow dance music
which can be danceable, u know...and I advice you the new TRON Legacy,
where the DAFT PUNK
wil come back, I'm sure with some cool Carpenter synthed low tempo dance
track. Sorry for the
promo, but cool movie with a cool soundtrack.
PRINCE - CONTROVERSY (Warner)
Pure dancing track, real time recording dance track, for the pleasure
of the girls. Here it's more
Peter Digital who speak to you, my other project (along with another project,
Souleance). The funk from Prince learned me a lot,
about simple elements, simple and evident mixing, I mean if u put the bell or the snare louder, it
will punch the crowd, and today we never think about that. To surprise the crowd & the listener.
ROY AYERS - LOVE WILL BRING US BACK TOGETHER
(Polydor)
Woooow...I think I would always dance on that track. Love message with the
most groovy band.
Funk is my first influence music style I think, black music in general, but
more funk & jazz funk.
After beat, off beat, to play loose, to put the clap a lil'bit after the
snare, that's it, that's what I
do in all my music, and it comes from FUNK.
HERBERT - YOU SAW IT ALL (K7)
Here we go more to a lovely track, with some kind of perfect sound engineer,
Monsieur Herbert,
who for me, is one of my favorite producer because he can do Jazz, House,
Hip Hop, FM Pop, big band!!...
everything is possible for him. And even if it's a fuckin hard way to
produce, I really like the way he sees the music, he said one time something
near "I always do my samples, never use any soundbank"...whoooo, I would love to
be able to do that. heheh. Excellent.
MOCKY - SOUL CONTROL (Rush Hour)
Not the most famous but the most interesting track from Mocky for me.
I love his rappin and singing, and people knows him more about that, but
he's
a great music producer u know, behind Jamie Lidell, Feist etc...and that's
why I present this
track.Check it. Strange psyche housey jazz....crazy. Maybe because I was
under strange
substances the first time I listened to it....ouups.sorry...no but this
track is wicked.
PREFUSE 73 - HOT WINTER'S DAY (WARP)
So now we really arrive near my first composing/producing influence. Scott
Herren.
This track is not the most famous, and I could choose most of hs track, but
it's a track
which show how he can break, plays beautiful keyboards, chopped and twisted
drums...
I think I bought a MPC because of first Prefuse 73 Liveshow I saw.
Impressive.
Now I changed my way to do music, but this guy learned me a lot about
breaks, chooped played
voices & beats.
WEATHER REPORT - ELEGANT PEOPLE (Cbs)
Some people will say, awwwwrrggh, Jaco Pastorious, but I'm sorry, this band
is the
supreme jazz funk team, and most of all on this Black Market album. You can
hear in
the intro of this track the magical sample that Portishead used. And after
that it's just
beautiful song, elegant song. I polayed bass, and a little of keyboard, so
I really keep
today some tricks from bass, ghost notes, percussive stuff...etc...and I
think Zawinul
inspired me on melodies, u know i come back to this simple one melodies
that stuck in
your head.
Q TIP - GO HARD (Arista)
Minimal hip hop, detroit style, and with the best MC in the world for me.
I really used that kind of arpeggiator, I could quote Moroder for that, but
here,
I love the simple track and how Q Tip build on it. The pitty is that I
don't even know
who produced that track...this album was not so good criticized, but I
think it's a new
step in music. Maybe TRIBE CALLED QUEST stayed more in fan heads and
so....
Q Tip, if u read this, let's go for a track??!!!
TORTOISE - GIGANTES (Thrill Jockey)
You gonna say, it's strange to present a 2009 Tortoise track as an
influence, but I have to say u
that I still gete some influences from today producers (Afta 1, Dorian
Concept, Flako, Débruit) and
post rock, post funk still touch me from the way it brings feelings,
mathematical but simple structure...
But I can say that Tortoise is in my head from the first album. ANd I hope
soon or one day, to create a band,
near that post rock style, with all my background from Funk & Hip
Hop.ANd this new album from Tortoise is
my favorite for me, even if I love the others, and I do not compare, but
it's more that u can hear that this guys still listen some electronic music, and u can hear it this album: shifted
beat "Rustie Style", arpeggiator "Dabrye Style" and many more.
Maybe I go too far, but I'm ready to play this on coins. And so bass, strange beat structures still used in my stuff, even if I love
to do some 1/2 music, heheh.
