big up to Leo Zero for dropping this beauty of a re-work of Massive Attack's Teardrop. He calls it 'micro house'. Not sure what that is but its certainly something I'd be dancing to in the wee hours of the morning as the sun rises. 

"This acapella turned up online a few weeks back and I was straight at it as soon as I had a spare minute! - I've been listening to a lot of old Playhouse stuff recently - what a tip top record label that is..... anyway it must have rubbed off - as this has gone all micro house... one for the late night sessions."

such a big tune. truly epical. leo zero takes on Paul Weller's 'no tears to cry' and creates an 8 minute Northern Soul belter. now Paul Weller is pretty much a legend in my eyes and is one of the greatest songwriters who has been massively under-rated in many ways which is a shame yet he keeps on coming back and turing out quality. he plays SeaSessions later this year and I'd love to go see him but won't be able to unfortunately.

I think of this sound as what was going on at Blackpool's Mecca Ballroom on the Northern Soul scene - slightly disco-fied.... but this track also reminds me of Neil Diamond and Glen Campbell - it's a truly great song, and I was literally jumping round the studio with excitement when I first heard it! It was one thing to land a Paul Weller mix after being a fan for so long, but then to find out it was for such a belter of a song was mindblowing."

missed yesterday. was at my folks house with no computer. realized when on my way there that i had no music. need to start digitizing my dad's music collection now in case that happens again!

if you're in london tonight i'd highly recommend you go to deviation to see harmonic 313 dj along with a live p.a. from mayer hawthorne and i'm sure some benjib  for good measure! this will be one to well remember.

mark pritchard (he of harmonic 313), mix of  dj mujava's 'township funk' which has been remixed all over the place with sinden's killing it by laying all that bass that he does best.
tonight we get the version excursion and it is true to it's word. a really nice twist to the original. taking it down.

46 days of lent...days 5 & 6

apologies to all (especially ken) for missing yesterday's post. got much sidetracked over the weekend.
gonna post two tunes today to make up for it.

first up is junior boys (playing dublin, march 14th). much thanks to covert for turning me onto this album. i've had it on and off for the past two weeks with some tunes off the album, Begone Dull Care*, grabbing more attention than others but overall a really interesting and enjoyable album to listen to.

dunno why i hadn't posted this next tune before. nialler9 he talked about jaydiohead back in january, describing the album as "2009s first worthy mashup album" and great stuff it is with 'wrong prayer' being such a big tune. jay-z is just a powerful rapper. pure poet skills.

*Begone Dull Care is also a movie made in 1949 which has a plot , as described by imdb as being 'Abstract images drawn directly onto the film are accompanied by three pieces of jazz performed by the Oscar Peterson trio.' posting the whole thing here as its great and this then counts as a design/art post aswell as i'm due one.one the best depiction of music i've seen and its drawn like an animation. brilliant.

46 days of lent...day 1

working with ken over at kilkenny music in doing a series of posts to celebrate lent! ken will be posting about an album a day but i'll just be doing a tune a day. needless to say its a bit of an undertaking but hopefully it will be engaging as i'll try and post some stuff that maybe i usually wouldn't.
for ya'll out there in the know about such things would point out that lent is 40 days long but according to ken:
"In theory, seemingly, Sundays don't count during lent, hence the whole 40 day thing, but who says you have to stop listening to music on a Sunday!"

so, to kick it off i have this little gem which is a floating points remix of femi kuti's cover of fela's 'water get no enemy' that mixes in some d'angelo magic. tricked out percussion is filled out with some killer bassline, magic kuti keys and d'angelo's vocals interspersed. lovin' this feel.

every now and again a song just comes along and it rushes over you with its gentleness and melodic beauty. as close to perfect in a song as you can get.

you know me

Róisín Murphy comes to town in December so I'll definitely be going along to check out her show. While some reviews of her live shows have been hit or miss the thoughts of  "slithery rhythms, percussion-laced Ibizan beats and muscular disco-funk..." are so enticing when delivered by the sultry Murphy.
Hot on the heels of working with Roots Manuva on his new album, here's a bass heavy Toddla T remix of 'you know me better'.

fight test

Probably my favourite The Flaming Lips tune remixed here by the well talented Backyard Bangers.
Not too much done with it to be honest but some simple effects, and a slowed down bass beat. Keeps the original intact beautifully. Lovely stuff.
If you ever get a chance to see the Flaming Lips play live please do anything that you can to be there. Its an experience that shouldn't be missed by many people in the world.

all i need

After Radiohead's In Rainbows came out last year, turning many people in the industry upside down and causing a lot of much needed discussion about where it was all going, Oakland artist Amplive announced that he was making his remix album, Rainydayz, available for free to anyone who provided proof of 'purchase' of the In Rainbows album.
Anyways, he got a cease and desist order about this causing some confusion to many as the original material has been available for free.

None the less-he's back and here is some of the text from his email this morning with 'all i need' remixed after that.

"as you probably know, a cease & desist put the breaks on the project last month, and its future has remained unclear. Until today. While Amp acknowledges that he probably should have contacted Radiohead (who were not involved in the project) to seek approval prior to making his interpretations publicly available, an agreement has been reached between all involved parties and Amplive has been granted permission to release Rainydayz Remixes for free to the general public.


For the next eight days, Amplive will release one Rainydayz Remix track a day via his iLike iCast, which means you can plaster these mixes all over your Facebook profile and beyond. All you need to do is head over to Amp's iLike page and click the iLike logo to get these tracks and future Amplive releases delivered straight to you."

Right......time for me to get back into posting again after a little break.
To kick start it all off here is a stomping remix of a tune by Lekan Babalola. This is the broken beat remix by Le Pico.

Lekan Babalola is what one could refer to as a master percussionists in the worlds of jazz and world music today. He started his career playing in the Yoruba Christian church owned by his father, Olayiwola Babalola. As his skills as a master percussionist grew, he was invited to join Gasperlawal in 1980. His career continues with performances with greats like Fela Kuti and Roy Ayers.

Taken off the album, Songs of Icon (Mr Bongo), the album features remixes by the top names in the broken beat/ leftfield scene such as Mark de Clive Lowe and Afronaut.

Give It Again

The best term that I have heard for this tune comes from Gilles Peterson who called it "a bad bwoy tune".
Nuff said Gilles.
A  top tune from Overtone that gets a killer remix by one of my favourite acts around, Inverse Cinematics, this brings with it a dirty rolling bassline,  some fine futurefunk sonics, and feet stomping tech-dub to get the dancefloor going.

Heart of Glass

I just got this tune tonight, a totally amazing remix of Blondie's Heart of Glass.
This track just blows me away- starting off very minimal, it just builds and builds with all kinds off electro beeps and clicks and then lifts you up and soars you away with that beautiful voice getting you set to rock your bootie off.
If you are gonna take a classic and improve on it...this is how you do it kids.

This is one of the best things I have come across in a long time.
